Reno's Artown 2009 Festival Artist
According to Executive Director Beth MacMillan, Reno’s 14th annual Artown has commissioned Candace Nicol, MFA for its 2009 Festival Artist. Candace Nicol’s creates her signature printmaking art from multi-layered photographed, then digitally manipulated, then etched to screen printing with glazing paintings. As Reno’s Artown 2009 Festival Artist, Nicol finalizes all concepts for the Festival’s marketing from its annual poster to its web site. That provides both a local connection to the annual event as well as Artown’s overall look each year.

Reno Homebrewer
With Brew Ha Ha, 2009's Biggest Kegger On The West Coast, coming up on January 24, 2009, and my article Listen: There's A Hell Of A Good Brewpub Next Door, Let's Go, I received some questions about homebrewing in Northern Nevada. Local Reno Homebrewer and WZZ are the places to start. Brewing is an ancient artform with endless possibilities for interesting and unusual tastes and Northern Nevada has some accomplished brewers, both professional and amateur.
The local homebrew club since 1985 is the Washoe Zephyr Zymurgists, or WZZ (pronounced "wiz"). WZZ has an annual Washoe Zephyr... (more)

Reno Stings Its Seniors
Jan R. is a Reno senior, disabled from an old broken back and a Navy vet. She lives quietly in Stead, which is part of sprawling Reno’s northern areas. Reno Municipal Code has an escalating monetary fine for not shoveling snow from sidewalks. Jan knows that, and knows she can no longer shovel snow. Christmas Day 2008, Reno got a heavy snowfall. On TV, Jan saw an announcement that a free snow shoveling service by the City of Reno for the seniors was available just by calling 334-4636. Therefore, Jan called.
No one ever did come out to shovel Jan’s sidewalk although Jan ended... (more)

Hahn Family Unfairly Busted By City Of Reno
Mrs. Hahn is a Reno resident. Mrs. Hahn is increasingly feeling like she’s getting no respect. She lives quietly in Stead, which is part of sprawling Reno’s northern areas. Reno Municipal Code has an escalating monetary fine for trash accumulation. Mrs. Hahn knows that, and on her Waste Management (WM) trash pick day, which is Wednesdays, she puts her WM container out first thing in the morning and brings it back into their yard after the trash pick up. That happened for all of the past four years the Hahn family has lived in their Stead home, built in 1978.
Then, one Wednesday,... (more)

Tolerance, Not License, Governs Reno Tahoe
Studies have repeatedly found that many people base their lifestyle decisions on movie models and would do just about anything to be in style. It was and often remains to the silver screen that the standards for social ideas, values and behavior were and are looked for. Silent films set in Reno, Nevada were the 1921 Wedding Bells, the 1922 The Primitive Lover, the 1923 Reno, the 1926 Forbidden Waters, the 1927 A Reno Divorce, and the 1928 On to Reno. Author/journalist Mary Day Winn in 1931, noted “One can almost imagine some super-producer sitting down and deliberately planning Reno,... (more)

How Reno's RC Willey Did The Bait And Switch On Us
... the cards. At first Master Card and VISA refused to cancel them. It took six months, telephone calls, letters until finally I got both cards cancelled. Employees, including managers, refused to give their names, just an employee number. Now cash is tight and we are on a cash basis.
Off to Reno’s Lowe’s we go where Lowe’s agreed to finance a washer, dryer and refrigerator with 12 months zero interest no payments. Armed with that in writing, we go to Reno’s RC Willey on the way south end of Reno. There a Carol in appliances slyly pounces on us. We look around, pick out what we... (more)

Reno AAA: Where Our Members Don't Come First
Recently I went to renew my 37-year membership with AAA. I had not received a renewal notice. I went to the Reno AT&T phone book but was unable to find any listing for AAA. I called the 800 number on my AAA membership card, 800-222-4357. I got a Don, not allowed to give last name or employee number. Don told me that there are two AAA locations in Reno, both in South Reno. 6795 S. Virginia and the other on Damonte Ranch Road. Both very way south. Not at all centrally located. AAA, where all members outside of South Reno don’t come at all at AAA.AAA has only one location in Sparks and... (more)

Just down the road from Lake Tahoe are the cities of Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Truckee, and Sparks, all spectacular places to play, live, work and do business. Reno-Tahoe will surprise you! Whatever you may know, or think you know about the northern Nevada region, we have many cool cards up our sleeves. Here’s what I love about Reno-Tahoe.
Our Climate: We are within and located along side the Sierra Nevada Mountains. That gives us four moderate seasons with low humidity and sunshine 80% of the year! The majority of our precipitation comes from snow fall. For a San Francisco Bay... (more)Tags: reno, lake tahoe, carson city
