Freedom FROM Religion

By Agit8r, published on Mar 15, 2012

The assertion keeps coming up during sessions of shameless demagoguery: "Our Constitution grants us freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion." Some disagree by saying that we need both. That is partly true, but the latter certainly enjoys greater protection. And, given the system that our country revolted against, as it well should!

The wording that so often comes up is from a the pen of Thomas Jefferson. Now it could hardly be argued that Jefferson himself was unwilling to touch the freedom of religious institutions that had been granted charters by the public, when it was... (more)

Religion, Sex, Politics, It's All In The Eyes of...

By Notumbus Bumbus, published on Mar 15, 2012

When it comes to the Big Issues, like religion, sex, politics, and, for sake of a Fourth Horseman, sports, truth is, well, not true. Except from the perspective of the speaker. So it should really be no surprise to hear the new levels of hyperbole and hypocrisy we are getting from the various encampments these days. Even those fields of endeavor, like science, that seek real facts as the basis for managing our cultures and lives have been twisted beyond recognition to meet the needs of the yahoos currently beating the rest of us over our heads all in service to their righteous indignation.... (more)

Take your religion and shove it...

By Inmyredhead, published on Mar 29, 2012

...him get to me at all, and partly because my usual kiss off tactic didn't work on this one as it has always worked on any and every one of them that has come before, trying to convert me. Usually, I tell them nicely but straight up honestly... I'm not interested. I'm very familiar with the religion. I have family who are Jehovah's Witnesses so I grew up with it all my life and I'm completely staunch in my religion, so I am not interested. Then they usually ask who my family member is and when I tell them, that's what shuts them up. He's well known in the Jehovah's Witness community... (more)

A President's Religion

By Randy Mitchell, published on Apr 12, 2012

...than me. Truthfully, I don’t fully understand the teachings of the Mormon Church. But, that’s okay, because come November I won’t be casting my vote for a church, I’ll be choosing a man to strengthen my country and position it for renewed growth and prosperity. Now, does a President's religion help define his performance in office, I say overwhelmingly and absolutely, “yes it does.”

Inevitably, every President and Presidential candidate is highly questioned about his spiritual beliefs, and rightly so. For myself, I really wouldn’t want a President who didn’t believe... (more)

Using Religion....Pathetic.

By rosenvegas, published on Jun 7, 2011

...cannot control my urge to vent. First and foremost, I am NOT a religious person. I believe in a higher power, most of you have a name for this higher power. For simplicity's sake, lets call this higher power God. I have tried over the years to find decent people who are involved with some religion and have failed....MISERABLY. Therefore, I have nothing positive to say about the topic. Except it means well, but fails miserable at its intentions. Hence the statement, "Religion is flawed because man is flawed."

Take this case: My ex-husband, whom for the most part I think is a... (more)

My Religion Terrifies Me

By Ahsan Daredia, published on Nov 21, 2011

Religion. It's a touchy subject. Instantly, it brings up many subtopics and views when brought upon in conversation.

Islam on the other hand, adds even more controversy to the debate as we live in a world of Islamaphobia.

It's a chilly night in Beijing as I'm weaving my way in and out a very packed aisle on board my flight to Karachi. I get to my seat after some effort. Every time I get my seat assignment, I secretly hope that it's someone nice and intelligent siting next to me; you know, someone I can make conversation with. Ah, 23L, here it is.

I look up to see a middle-aged... (more)

Religion, Choices, Atheism, and the Pursuit of Knowledge

By TheTAZZone, published on Aug 19, 2010

...In most cases, people follow the societal norm, ( for example ) if you grow up in a Christian household, go to a Christian school, have Christian friends, and live in a Christian environment, chances are you're going to lean toward Christianity. The same applies to virtually every other Religion. Or...you're going to rebel against it ( the norm ) and choose another Religion, or become an atheist. We are influenced in many ways by our environment.

So considering this the first and foremost thing a person should do is understand not what they believe, but rather ' why ' they... (more)

Religion And The Liberal

By rockofliberty, published on May 16, 2009

The thing that keeps a community safe is the way it’s individuals behave when they aren’t being watched. I am not religious or would I be confused with some one who is. I just understand the necessity of organized religion in any society, if for nothing else, for establishing peace and keeping order.Human beings are inherently irrational. They will believe in things they can’t see, can’t prove and in no way can they argue rationally. They just simply choose to believe. This irrationality was studied extensively from the late fifties through the early seventies. Time and time again the test... (more)

Whitewashing And Cherry Picking Religion

By Tina Dupuy, published on Jan 6, 2008

...has nothing to do with Jesus!” This is how the public has always reacted to the COG.

It’s upsetting and so it’s dismissed outright as not actually Christian. It’s a quick effort to make sense of it. That is how we deal with things we don’t like in religion. We reject all unpleasant elements as being frauds. Calling for the death of a teacher because she agreed to name a teddy bear Muhammad? That isn’t actually Muslim. The wide spread molestation of boys by priests? That isn’t actually Catholicism. The institutionalized and systematic ... (more)
