As the Medical Director of Prostate Oncology Specialists in Marina Del Rey, Dr. Mark Scholz is an outspoken advocate of a comprehensive approach to managing prostate cancer. He has seen a disturbing trend in the medical community concerning the overdiagnosis of prostate cancer, which kills 30,000 American males annually out of 220,000 who are diagnosed. “The problem is the one size fits all mentality. We want one solution for a complex problem,” said Dr. Scholz. “Clearly we are overdiagnosing a lot of prostate cancer and there has been a lot of unnecessary grief and harm because the treatments... At the beginning of this month I started a new job. Taking advantage of this reason to pursue newness in other areas of my life, I turned in my Blackberry to my old employer and purchased a Samsung Blackjack through Cingular. I was so excited about this purchase. The phone is a camera, camcorder, and PDA and MP3 player. It is able to do wireless syncs to my contacts and calendar on my laptop. I can receive emails from both my work and personal accounts on the phone. I can access the internet. The phone is incredibly light and thin. It is useful tool for an on-the-go lifestyle. For the first... Read More
Since yesterday morning, Wii owners can browse the Internet on their TV comfortably slouched on their couch. Unfortunately, the experience is not yet as smooth as we could have hoped. Wii owners were alerted of the news by the blue glow on the console disc tray (notifying users of new console updates). It's the second time this week that Nintento pushes an update to their users. Monday, we received the very fun Weather Forecast feature, and yesterday the long awaited Web Browser enabling us to surf the Internet with our Wii. After a rather long download (5 to 10 minutes), a new channel appears... Read More
...My only sunshine. There is only one true source of light, when it comes to receiving my daily dose of day-glow; that big bulb in the sky. But when life finds me squandered under the deary skies of Chicago, sunshine is a little harder to come by for about nine months out of the year. As Seasonal Affective (or should we say, Defective?) Disorder (SAD) becomes more and more well-known, people are being to recognize the trend between their levels of happiness and the amount of sunshine they receive. Guess that's what makes Los Angeles so dang enticing to us snow birds. Just as soon as Christmas... Read More
I was first introduced to Wikipedia when I saw a shirt bearing their logo. My boyfriend joked about it and I gave him a strange look. He told me about it and I checked it out. Since then I have used it many times and it seems like I’ve been hearing about it more and more. Wikipedia defines itself as “a multilingual, Web-based free content encyclopedia project.” At first glance it may seem like just another website, but it’s more than that. It is a part of the trend in shifting information from a tangible format to a digitized one. It is also an example of information being not only freely... Read More
Thirteen years ago, the NICHD (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development) in conjunction with the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics), SIDS Alliance, and the Association of SIDS and Infant Mortality Programs launched the “Back to Sleep” program. In its thirteen years, SIDS related deaths have decreased by more than 50%. This is a remarkable success rate. In 1990 the SIDS related death rate per 1000 live births was 1.30. One year after the launch of “Back to Sleep” 1994, the rate was 1.17; by 2002 the rate was 0.56. While SIDS continues to affect 0.7 in 1000 live births/year,... Read More
The Wii (pronounced "Weeeeeeeee!!!!") is Nintendo's highly anticipated new game console. Previously know as 'Project Revolution', the successor to the Nintendo GameCube came out 2 weeks ago and I finally got a chance to give it a try. For only $250, the Wii comes with a game, a controller comprised of a Wiimote and a nunchunk, and a sensor bar. The PS3 and the Xbox 360 are both much more expensive and still require you to buy a game (add an extra $60) to enjoy the system. Nintendo's console is therefore a really good bargain compared to the competition. More than its price, what sets aside... Read More
