In response to the request of a reader here on BrooWaha, I hereby offer my two cents about the doomsday event that many folks believe will happen next year. There is nothing in the ‘Long Count’ Olmec/Maya/Aztec calendar that suggests the end of the world or some other catastrophe will take place when this calendar resets in December 2012. It is merely the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one. I know this to be true, because I spent years researching the civilizations of prehistory so that I could give my novel, ‘Secret of the Immortals’ as much basis in fact as I possibly could.... The recent announcement by these players to advance up the book industry value chain from retailing to publishing comes as no surprise. In an industry which has many handoffs in its delivery process, and many players, each player muzzles for maximum turf over time. The ones upstream (i.e. the creators) try to advance down the chain like oil companies muzzling into retail gas stations. Those at the tail, retailers like Amazon and Kobo, try to move into the middle currently occupied by publishers, and those in the middle try to go both ways like departments stores that create loyalty programs... Researchers seem to be close to a new therapy for obesity based on results from testing they have been conducting on mice and now monkeys.
In 2004, two Cancer Biologists, Arap and Pasqualini reported that they attached a cell-killing drug to a peptide that traveled to blood vessels in fat tissue. The treatment led to weight loss in mice.
In their most recent work that was published today in Science Translational Medicine, they repeated the experiments on obese monkeys. They used the the drug on 10 rhesus monkeys and compared them with 5 in the control group.

When you see meat, such as a juicy turkey on your Thanksgiving table, it would seem to be reasonable to believe that we'd start acting more aggresively and display more signs of cavemen behavior, such as aggression and assuming protective postures, in order to "keep our Thanksgiving kill.".
Kachanoff, a researcher with a special interest in evolution at McGill University’s Department of Psychology, thought the same. "He thought the sight of meat on the table would make people more aggressive, not less. After all, don’t football coaches feed their players big hunks of red meat before... Read More
If you use Facebook, and who doesn't, then your brain size correlates to how many Facebook "friends" you have. Actually it also correlates to how many "real friends" you have. Confused yet?
Researchers from University College London reported that certain areas of your brain have more "grey matter" the more friends you have on Facebook. The researchers also concluded that if you have more Facebook friends then you tend to have more "real world friends." The study did not take into account the total number of internet relationships that participants had. They limited their research... Read More
Technology is becoming more and more powerful as years move on. This is confirmed by a team of Swiss engineers who have built a plane flying using solar energy. This attempt is presently being conducted to ascertain whether this prototype plane running on solar power is viable or not. The prototype plane departed from an airport located in Switzerland shortly before 7am local time on Wednesday, 7 July 2010. For this reason, engineers in the Solar Impulse control room and pilot Andre Borschberg cheered loudly when the prototype plane passed the historic milestone.
This attempt is to check... Read More
An African's perspective. The American President, Mr Obama, finally met with BP officials in Washington. This is the first time they met over a course of 60 days of oil spill which according to experts, is now leaking at the rate of 60,000 barrels a day. This is two times the rate that was previously estimated. The disaster grows. Yet it is amazing that Obama and the CEO had not met or spoke previously.
The oil spill is a tremendous assault on the shores, environment and the citizens of America. Oil has been spewing into the sea for 2 months since the BP rig exploded. When Mr Obama met... Read More
