Republicans are the problem. That is the conclusion of the excellent new tome “It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism” by congressional scholars Thomas E. Mann and Norman J. Ornstein. Mann is a liberal from the Brookings Institution and Ornstein is a conservative from the American Enterprise Institute, so they can hardly be accused of a partisan agenda.

“It’s Even Worse Than It Looks” labels today’s GOP as an “insurgent outlier” in American politics that “contributes disproportionately to its dysfunction.” The... Read More

The Supreme Court held today that USA owes Native American tribes in the millions after underpaying them for public services between the years 1994 and 2001.

The decision will mean millions of dollars for Navajo and certain other Native American tribes. Under Federal law the US is required to reimburse Native Americans for certain program costs such as running education, security, and environmental protection programs.

The federal government however has only paid them anywhere between 77% to 92% of the actual costs during the period in question. "The government was obligated... Read More

Al-Shabaab, the Somali offshoot of al-Qaeda, has offered a bounty of ten camels to “whoever reveals the hideout of that idiot Obama.” It’s their response to the US State Departments recent announcement of a reward of several million dollars for information on the whereabouts of the movement’s leadership.

I wonder, perhaps, if the Somalis are being a little too generous in their assessment of the beleaguered President’s worth. Ten camels seems excessive for a man who recently said that the American private sector was “doing fine”, a view, I would hazard, not quite in keeping with the... Read More

Now, I cannot definitively prove, or disprove, that Mitt Romney isn't a secret unicorn using an alien mind probe acquired by Bain Capital in a hostile takeover that infects it's targets with resistant strains of gonorrhea. And that is precisely the problem, as the birthers have so well educated us on. One can have a suspicion, based on suggestions planted by various right/left conspiracies, that seem, well, probably on their face, but later prove to be, well, hard to prove. And when enough of that science stuff is finally discounted as biased against certain righter-way thinking, well, proof... Read More

Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro announced they were in talks for a new boxing movie. The movie is called “Grudge Match” and was written by Entourage creator Doug Ellin. This time it's not a “Rocky” kind of thing. No botox, no dramatic workout, no real boxers. It's a comedy about two retired boxers who return to the ring for a final match. According to perez hilton, Warner Bros has not yet confirmed the realization of the project. Sly recently announced this time, it will be his “final” boxing movie. Stallone recently criticized the new era of action heroes, “This genre unfortunately... Read More

Mitt Romney wants America to make him the next President, and the most compelling argument he seems to have is that, as a corporate raider, he knows how to make businesses successful. Thus, he is using the time-honored (by Republicans, at least) trope that people who have never run a business cannot possibly know how to run a government, conflating the two enterprises without an ounce of substance to the argument. Business, after all, is about profit for the shareholders, whereas government is about managing the infrastructure and defending the nation in the name of all its citizens, and thus,... Read More
