Have a good look look at the famous scene from the timeless comedy classic 'Life Of Brian'. Brian of Nazareth addresses the adoring crowd and says he doesn't want people following him. No, he wants people to work things out for themselves. Makes you laugh? Well, it should also make you cringe a bit as well. Are we really 'working out things for ourselves?' Or are we soaking up the mantra of 'collective action' instead? Do you believe your government always knows best and looks after your interests like a sort of benign older relative? I don't and never have.

So let's translate this in... Read More

This is the most difficult article I’ve ever written. In the face of the appalling tragedy in Connecticut it’s almost impossible to find the right words. I love words but sometimes they are so inadequate. Here it might be said that respectful silence is the only response, silence and sorrow in silence.

But others are speaking and some are shouting, bawling almost. I raise my voice in a perfect storm, knowing that I’m unlikely to be heard, or if heard I am likely to be misunderstood. Just about every report I’ve read about the mass shootings last week at Sandy Hook Elementary School in... Read More

I watch the news of your national tragedy at Newtown and I personally think the ages of the victims makes this truly the most awful mass shooting I have ever seen. I appreciate it is still so raw, that perhaps I should let the dust settle before I even comment, but after seeing a sober report by an Australian academic on morning current affairs, I feel the content of his interview is worth sharing.

I begin by saying, that any comparison between the US, where the right to bear arms is enshrined in your Constitution, and my country Australia, is necessarily skewed. We have a different... Read More

I don’t suppose too many people here read the Moscow Times, Russia’s only English language newspaper. Well, then, let me tell you that it reported recently that there are people in Russia indulging in a spot of schadenfreude, taking pleasure from the misfortune of others. The recent secession petitions following Obama’s re-election in November have led predictions that the USA is about to collapse in just the same way that the USSR collapsed.

There is really nothing new in this wishful thinking; for that is exactly what it is. A few years ago Igor Panarin, a former KGB analyst, published... Read More

I'm going to teach you the basic elements of 'Life Cycles' theory using the lives of Bill and Hilary Clinton as my case studies. There is an excellent TV mini-series on them at the moment and that's what got me started. In Part One I demonstrated how central the age of 36 was to Bill Clinton's career. In this year he had to regain the Governorship of Arkansas, after losing it ignominiously some two years before. He had to learn to listen to voters and not be seen as arrogant. He succeeded and it led to an unbroken political career taking him all the way to the White House.

Now we are... Read More

I was amused to discover on Blog Catalogue earlier this week that secession petitions are flooding into the White House in the wake of Barack Obama’s re-election to the presidency. What, are we really back in 1860, is American on the threshold of a new Civil War? No and yes, is my answer, a point to be clarified a bit later.

There they are, pleas coming from some of the same offenders: from Texas, from Alabama, from Georgia, from Louisiana, from South Carolina, from North Carolina, from Tennessee, from Arkansas and from Florida, all former members of the old Confederacy. There are... Read More

I watched a biography of Bill and Hilary Clinton last night on TV. I like biographies, because someone else has decided what emphasis to place on events, that could be considered as turning points in the subject's life. Imagine you had determined the centrality of just a small number of years from a person's life, as being like 'the ushering in of a new era' in their life, and here you are in front of the TV, or at the movies, and they start to talk about events in these exact years. I'll bet you'd sit up and start to pay more attention. Well that's what I do. I'm not some sort of 'know all'... Read More
