2nd Annual Brazilian Film Festival

Los Angeles-Americans have been in awe, intrigued and inspired by Brazilian culture for a long time. There is a large vibrant and thriving community of Brazilians in California thanks in part to the large influx who have settled into Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara and San Francisco. We can enjoy Brazilian cuisine, martial arts, dance, music, art and get a dose of Carnaval and a full range of Brazilian cinema (animation, documentaries, featured films and short films).

The 2nd Annual Brazilian Film Festival 2009 was held on March 12-15... Read More

I love comics, graphic novels, and all their permutations- the darker the better. I believe that I am actually a fanboy trapped in a woman's body, so I was very avid to see "The Watchmen". Gee, where to start? I guess the length is a good place to start. 3 hours- Sheesh! While I am all for trying to remain faithful to the nuances of the original novel by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore, this film did not use every minute to best effect. Well, let me clarify that, the creators (the same team that brought us "300", which I loved) chose to use the time to present as many FX as possible, at... Read More

Warner Bros & Paramount Pictures

Directed by Zack Snyder

Produced by Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin and Deborah Snyder

Screenplay by David Hayter and Alex Tse

Based on the comic book limited series and graphic novel created by Alan Moore (writer) and Dave Gibbons (artist)

If you were reading comic books back in 1986 then you probably read the twelve issue limited series WATCHMEN right from the beginning. You were in on the ground floor of a work of art that has come to be called ‘The Citizen Kane of graphic novels’.... Read More

Fox Searchlight Pictures

Directed by Darren Aronofsky

Produced by Darren Aronofsky and Scott Franklin

Written by Robert D. Siegel

Separately Mickey Rourke and Darren Aronofsky have given me many hours of cinematic pleasure. Mickey Rourke starred in what to me is one of the scariest movies ever made “Angel Heart” which is a damn good mixture of the private eye and horror genres. I even liked “Harley Davidson And The Marlboro Man””Year Of The Dragon” and “Heaven’s Gate”... Read More

And you thought I wasn’t going to say anything about this year’s Academy Awards. You should know by now that any time I can take shots at a bunch of liberal hacks I’m going to do it.

First of all, I didn’t even watch this year and the sole reason was because Sean Penn was nominated for a best actor award. That alone was reason enough for me to go find something better to do with my time last Sunday. But for Penn to be nominated for best actor in anything is enough reason to boycott the Academy Awards. But then he’s nominated for a movie named for a white beverage that issues from... Read More

Written, Directed and Produced by Tyler Perry

I’m pretty sure that if I ever ran into Tyler Perry and asked him why he titled this movie MADEA GOES TO JAIL when she actually spends a relatively short amount of the movie’s 103 minutes in jail he would most likely answer: “Well, I never said she would spend the whole movie in jail.” Which actually would be a pretty reasonable answer. Madea does go to jail and she does raise her unique brand of hell while she’s there. But the movie... Read More
