In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day (later changed to Veterans Day) with the following words:

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”.

In the spirit of this remembrance, I would like to suggest watching... Read More

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP

1982

Warner Bros.

Directed and Produced by George Roy Hill

Screenplay by Steve Tesich

Based on the novel by John Irving

I don’t believe in coincidence. I firmly believe that what may seem like unrelated incidents are no such thing at all. They happen for a reason. From the world-shattering to the utterly mundane. Indulge me for a minute, okay? I promise I’ll be brief as I explain.

I recently got an email from a reader of my reviews who had read the reviews I wrote on “The Whole... Read More

SURROGATES

2009

Touchstone Pictures

Directed by Jonathan Mostow

Produced by Max Handelman and Elizabeth Banks

Screenplay by John Brancanto and Michael Ferris

So we’re on our way to the theater to catch an early evening showing of SURROGATES and my wife Patricia mentions that the few reviews she’s heard or read about the movie aren’t particularly flattering. I smugly reply that Bruce Willis has had a pretty good track record with science fiction movies. Even though I didn’t like “Armageddon”... Read More

What would happen if Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody, who broke onto the scene with Juno, were to write a horror-comedy? Jennifer's Body would happen.

Moviegoers (at least those outside of the filmmaking world) don't often concern themselves with who wrote what, so the fact that Diablo Cody's name comes up, alongside Megan Fox's, in association with Jennifer's Body shows what an impact she made with Juno.

How has Cody garnered such attention? Of course, her Oscar win has helped, yet even before that, her stripper-turned-screenwriter story made the news. And then there's... Read More

Antarctica. Murder. Kate Beckinsale. You'd think there would be something worthwhile here. Think again.

Directed by Dominic Sena and based on the graphic novel of the same name, Whiteout stars Kate Beckinsale as Carrie Stetko, a U.S. deputy marshal assigned to Antarctica. Planning to head back to the States before a whiteout occurs and darkness sets in for half a year, Carrie investigates a body found in the snow and detects foul play. Change of plans. Soon, a masked, axe-wielding killer emerges, and more bodies start piling up. Carrie needs to solve this mystery before she becomes the... Read More
