There was a time when people could actually have a civil political discussion with those who held different views. For example, at one time conservatives such as William F. Buckley would intelligently debate those who held liberal beliefs. He did not stoop to applying cowardly erroneous labels to them or to trying to discredit their entire existence; he stated his beliefs and he listened to theirs.
Believe it or not, liberals and conservatives are really not all that far apart. They do, as a rule want what is best for their country. They may go about it in different ways and have different... Read More
In my efforts to understand and help more and more people incorporate personal wellness and fitness into their lives, I reflected on my past experiences to help me remember how things used to be in terms of the lifestyle I lived in my younger days. Things weren't as complicated back then.
In our teenage and young adult years, many of us played some type of a sport with a passion. We were fit, regularly active, and our bodies’ metabolisms were at their prime. I remember the days when I could easily eat 2 super sized Double Quarter Pounders with cheese meals after soccer or basketball... Read More
Benjamin Franklin once said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” The profundity of this thought reflects upon the significance of knowledge and self-expression. For centuries, education has been an uplifting attribute of self-awareness. Education leverages one’s personality, character, and moral consciousness. As a spearhead to extricate the self from dogmas and nuances of fear, education has been the handbook of insight that edifies positive behavior, indoctrinates intellectual expression, and stimulates self-exploration. But what happens when education... Read More
The other day I heard a grown son and his father argueing. The arguement turned physical and the police were called out to intervene. I remember a discussion I had with that father just moments prior, where we were discussing our "grown" children and his opinion that you can't change who a person is. I wasn't quite sold on his opinion so I offered mine. I believe if you offer choices and explain the consequences/benefits of each choice to a person/child, they will make the right choice more times than not. But then, I have only used this with my soon to be 7 year old and some managers, not... Read More
John Lennon wrote a song about it; suspense thriller novels have been based on it; even romantic comedies poke fun at it. Let’s face it: we all could be cast on Survivor; Redemption Island, in the way we play games with one another.
Dr. Eric Berne (1910-1970), a Canadian-born psychiatrist, developed Transactional Analysis. This is a powerful tool that can be used to help an individual develop awareness and understanding behind motives and how he or she interacts with other people. This understanding leads to change: making better choices; altering responses that are counterproductive;... Read More
I have tried very hard to avoid this topic. But today I'm quite heated and therefore cannot control my urge to vent. First and foremost, I am NOT a religious person. I believe in a higher power, most of you have a name for this higher power. For simplicity's sake, lets call this higher power God. I have tried over the years to find decent people who are involved with some religion and have failed....MISERABLY. Therefore, I have nothing positive to say about the topic. Except it means well, but fails miserable at its intentions. Hence the statement, "Religion is flawed because man is flawed."... Read More
