"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful" Col 3:15"Be thankful." Such a simple phrase, but what did Paul mean? Be thankful for what? To whom? Let's think about it.The first thing that comes to mind is to be thankful to God for giving us salvation through His Son, Jesus. That's good. If it weren't for that, our lives would really be meaningless. If there were no "eternity," why would we spend so much time being "good?" Without salvation, what purpose would there be in living for anyone by yourself? We all know self-centered people.... Read More
I became a believer in Writer's Conferences about five years ago. Oh, I'd been to one before, but hadn't been terribly impressed. Then my mother talked me into giving this local one a try. It was held in my current hometown, here on the Oregon coast and was much smaller than the one I'd been to up in Portland. Would it be too much of a stretch to say it changed my life? I will say I've gone back every year since and for the past five years been one of the volunteer organizers.
So why should you, a writer spend your hard earned money on traveling to and attending a writer's conference?... Read More
"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience" James 1:2-3Today this world is desperately attempting to redefine anything that would convict it of sin. Sin has become a very "relative" term. The world is attempting to say, "What is sin to you may or may not be sin to me. Everything is relative." Whether you realize it or not, this philosophy is being taught in our public schools. All students today, understand this principle. Simply said, "There are NO absolutes." Implied meaning, "There is NO God." Scripture tells... Read More
"Chasten your son while there is hope, And do not set your heart on his destruction" Proverbs 19:18An average child begins to struggle with his identity and seek his independence as he approaches the age of 12. The permissive parent starts to panic when the child assumes his own identity and starts pulling away. Fearing the worst, the parent becomes authoritarian by tightening the screws of discipline and restricting the child's activities. A power struggle ensues with predictable results. The child bolts and the parent calls for advice. The problem of the rebellious, stubborn, disobedient child... Read More
"Why then have You brought me out of the womb? Oh, that I had perished and no eye had seen me!" Job 10:18Why me, oh Lord. Why did you let this happen to me?Ever heard those words uttered before. Have you said them yourself? As I look back on my life, most of the "Why me's" have been a result of my own actions. I can hardly blame anyone else for those. For example, Janette and I went on a mini vacation a while back. I felt the Lord telling me not to. I heard my wife saying it wasn't necessary. We went anyway and had a terrible time. I asked, "Why me?" As the days wore on and mysterious things... Read More
"You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?" says the LORD of hosts. "Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house" Haggai 1:9Sometimes they are on top of the world; other times they are in the pits. Ever wonder why?Have you ever tracked your spiritual development and compared it to your financial status? I have, and I sometimes find that when I have sin abounding in my life, my financial status does a serious reversal. I have also discovered that I have received plenty of warning and opportunities... People ask me: Are you on Facebook? with a furtive look, as if inquiring whether I surf the 'net for porn. What do you make of it, they ask? They don't get it, they say, quizzically. They are suspicious of it, paranoid. Like it's going to suck their blood. Steal their souls. At the very least, expose them to the scrutiny of anonymous others from all quarters of the online universe. And lead to their eventual undoing.
Exposure is what Facebook is all about, I say. To complain about it is like going to a cocktail party and getting upset when people talk to you. If you... Read More
