So there I was, sitting comfortably inside a church pew listening to one of Dallas’ most popular preachers spreading his message, when curiously, I decided to gaze around and take note of others cell phone usage. What I saw was the inspiration of this week’s topic.

The Preacher’s message this week was very timely: How to take a day off; not only taking at least one day off each week from anything work-related, but really taking it off away from cell phones, computers, and anything electronic which could distract from quality time with family, friends, or doing something one regards as... As parents we accept certain things. And one of them is that our children grow up and eventually leave home.

Even though we accept this, it does not mean we like it.

Son no 2 has lived in Dubai for almost 2 years. I would be lying if I said I was totally happy with this. Has he made the right decision to start his career there - YES. Is he better of there - YES. Does he have better prospects there - YES. Is he safe there - YES. So why a I not happy? Because I still think of him as my baby and I want to be near him and protect him and share certain memories with him.

I am the mother of 4 boys and although I regard my boys are reasonably mellow, I have had my fair share of visits to the emergency room. After 24 years of motherhood and 4 sons, I have this love hate relationship with my doctor, the emergency rooms and our medical aid.

I can diagnose almost anything now and I get really annoyed when doctors tell me I am wrong (- which is never!). I also get very annoyed when I have a injured child and I have to take him to the doctor before I can get an X-ray done. Invariably the doctor orders an xray just to make sure so why must I wait for an emergency... Read More

It was my 25th Wedding Anniversary two weeks ago and all I got from Hubby was a bouquet of flowers. You could say I was expecting something silver or even a few diamonds, but I was clear out of luck.

Hubby asked me for weeks what I wanted for my anniversary but I just could not think of anything I really wanted. So I was not unimpressed with the flowers. It was a nice gesture from Hubby (who never buys me flowers).

After 25 years of marriage, it is very difficult to surprise each other. There is also nothing romantic about being married for 25 years - you have been through... Read More

Holding on to a job in the Silicon Valley then had become a problem for many. Harder still was to land a job. When my husband finally found work again, it was making a quarter of what he made before. And though it was income-enough to buy food, it wasn’t enough to have a place of our own.

So we lived here and there, at the mercy and kindness of family and friends, however separated from our two teenagers, still attending college. We did not want their education to be disrupted. It was imperative now more than ever that they finished their education. Without which they would not stand... Read More

I was merely eight-years-old when I first came to this country, a foreigner, born in Managua, Nicaragua. And though I was just a young child, I can remember hearing many wonderful things about this great nation. America is the land of opportunity! But America has let me down.

My husband and I got married in 1982, and we began our lives with high hopes and dreams for a fruitful future. We talked; we decided; and we divided our responsibilities as a young couple purposed for a family: he would bring home the bacon and I would temporarily give up my career to become a SAHM (stay-at-home-mom)....
