I don't normally do this sort of thing, but I feel I should say a few words about Bo Diddley. It's not because I had any personal tie with him. Although I did see him perform one time and that in itself is kind of an amazing thing. Not that I got to see him perform, mind you, but that I got to see him perform at the Ohio State student union for 10 bucks. Think about that. At that point, Bo was already in his mid-60s, and I saw him, a rock and roll legend, for a 10-spot at a student unition.

The reason I feel compelled to write this is because today, we lost something more than just a... Read More

Back in December, I had the opportunity to interview Bastard Winos. Recently, I caught up with the band and saw its performance at Fitzgerald's in Huntington Beach.

The band (well, three-fourths of it) kicked off its performance with a lowdown blues tune called "Orange Blossom." I don't know if it was the band's intention to begin with this song or if they chose to start with this one because the lead singer had not yet arrived. In any case, it was a tremendous way to begin the show, particularly with Harlis's guitar solo.

The band performed the first few tunes without Chile,... Read More

The weather was just right as a crowd of Jazz enthusiasts gathered to experience the glorious and tireless musicianship of Justo Almario and his wonderful ensemble on May 2, 2008 at the Friday Night Jazz Series hosted by Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in Los Angeles, California.

Justo conducted a "sound check" with the standard, "All The Things You Are" that quickly captivated our attention. His attention to melody, harmony, and the essence of the tune during his warm up was exquisitely beautiful.

Mr. Almario humbly accepted the applause and whispered into his microphone with... Read More

A bumper to bumper car ride on a Los Angeles congested freeway ended in a welcoming atmosphere of music satisfaction at the Parkway Grill in Pasadena on Friday, April 18th, 2008. The dinner crowd sat in a waited patiently for seating. As one entered the dining area gazing to their right, there was a cozy bar area softly beckoning patrons. All anticipating guests ready for a meal, a drink, a moment to reflect and perhaps enjoy a serenade of Jazz and Swing tunes had been drawn to the right space.

After about three minutes, I became very aware that this wasn't going to be a typical "interview." No, without a doubt, I was having a "conversation." True, I was on the phone, but within that short time span, I quickly began to feel like I was just sitting in some highway diner, having breakfast and talking to an old friend. Arlo Guthrie is an engaging man with a great sense of humor and and more than a good portion of humility.

Arlo, first let me thank you for taking the time to talk with me. I know you are in the midst of a tour and free time is precious. How long are you on the road... Read More
