Generic avatars Really bug me. Having a unique visual to associate with each voice in an online community can be very helpful in keeping all the different voices sorted out in one's mind. Not that it is absolutely necessary. Back on my very fist forum I was known by the catchy handle 74220,7411. Having handles longer than most phone numbers did not stop us from forming a real community back in the day, and even then there were participants using false names and taking other steps to protect their privacy and or manipulate the discussions. In the current era, a default avatar can come... Read More

Rank stupidity can be quite stunning, really. For the “crime” of pointing out that Constitutionally protected “freedom of speech” simply does not apply on a privately owned website, I have been attacked by a sock puppet account, called “ignorant” and “arrogant” and have taken almost as much abuse as a popular masochist at an S & M convention. I've long been familiar with the expression “the truth hurts” though I must confess that I never imagined how painful it would prove to be to point out a simple truth about web publishing and freedom of speech.

Most new bloggers learn fairly... Read More

Here in the United States, most citizens care deeply about our Consitutionally protected freedoms. Sadly, however, there often seems to be a great deal of mis-understanding about what those freedoms mean. This is expecially true of "freedom of speech". In the Internet era, "freedom of speech" may well be the most mis-used phrase out there.

Ammendment 1 to the United States Constitution is the legal basis for most all legitimate claims of "freedom of speech" in the United States. Let's look at exactly what it says:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment... Read More

I Lost myself in the city

looked under every garbage bin

but my courage

and smile

seemed to have been misplaced

I asked the man at the counter

if he's seen them

but he just shook his head and shrugged

I searched in the eyes of a child

but she just cried

I even asked the birds

but they flew away

so I walked aimlessly

looking franticly

trying not to cry

hugging myself

trying not to be afraid

but it seems I lost myself

somewhere in the city today

I... Read More

I believe it was Churchill who was quoted as saying "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma". And that quote more or less sums up this week's research into the history of BrooWaha. In response to last week's alottment of creamed corn, several Broosters admitted some acquaitance with "acid", and a guy named Joe wondered "What IS too much acid?". And I tried to do some research, but kind of phuqued up and fell flat on my face.

One bit of advice that I've heard several times is to focus my investigations on the early writing of the original Broosters. And I have spent... Read More

I've long been a fan of Tony Berkman. He is one of the sharpest people I know and I consider him a friend. If he had done some kind of not at all clear "not-exactly-a-buyout-more-like-an-angel-investor-sort-of-deal" for a site I detested, I would immediately be ready to give it another look. I had never heard of BrooWaha before one of Tony's posts on Blog Catalog caught my attention and I wandered in. And was almost immediately hooked.

I've been publishing a book review site for more than three years now. Three years of having to read and absorb at least one full book for every... Read More

Money today

gone tomorrow

I spend it like water

use it before it comes

count it like sheep

and earn it like spankings

drown in it like quick sand

and eat it like supper

dream about it at night

and feel it at day

work for it like muscles

lose it like sweat

money today

gone tomorrow

Musings Of A Poet

I know Rigina, when it takes a week for legite comments to appear it is upsetting, and it is killing the site slowly. Surely there must be a better way to address the spammers and floggers. Also taking away ratings if you do not post in a period of...
