Look after your heart and it will look after you

We often hear the messages about your heart health. Your heart is the most vital organ but with weight gain and other issues, your heart can be put under strain. If you are obese, your heart is working harder to pump. Although heart disease can’t be cured, it can be improved and many forms are very treatable today. There is some evidence that maintaining healthy high blood pressure and lowering cholesterol to very low levels will help reverse plaques in the coronary arteries. Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease and when there is a buildup of cholesterol plaque inside the artery walls it can cause many physical problems. However the best option is of course….prevention. Heart health is vital and if you have any of the following symptoms you should certainly get it checked by your doctor:

  • Chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure and chest discomfort (angina)
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Pain, numbness, weakness or coldness in your legs or arms if the blood vessels in those parts of your body are narrowed.
  • Pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen or back.

The best way is to defend your body and arm it with the right things to ensure it stays healthy. Your heart is constantly working and you need to be aware of what can assist you. We often hear in the media about not eating red meat and this can be a very good thing to cut out or cut down on but there are other ways also:

  1. Add more good fats to your diet. Good fats are better known as unsaturated fats.
  2. Cut sources of saturated fat, such as fatty meat and dairy. Choose lean cuts of meat, do not eat the fat and look at plant-based options.
  3. Eliminate artificial sources of trans fats.
  4. Increase your fiber intake such as leafy greens, bananas and whole grains.
  5. Cut back on sugar - if you are eating a pack of donuts a day and seven teaspoons of sugar in your tea, then you are not assisting your body at all.

Be aware of your mental health

There are so many medical professionals that are within the mental health sphere and strive to give us all better mindsets to continue with our lives. Anxiety is a huge problem that can have numerous physical and mental effects. Depression and anxiety affects millions worldwide and is very common indeed. You should always look at

  1. Shout it out. Talking to a trusted friend is one way to cope with anxiety.

  3. Break up with caffeine.

  6. Don't skip meals.
  7. Give yourself an exit strategy.
  8. Live in the moment.
