This article will be covering different ways to ensure that you stay healthy to reduce the chances of these conditions occurring.

1. Maintain a healthy weight

It can be a lot easier said than done maintaining a healthy weight, but keeping your weight in check can be done by sticking to some of these simple tips. Firstly, if you find yourself overweight, your first focus should be to ensure that you do not gain any more weight – this by itself can help improve your health. Then when you're ready to start, you should try and take off some extra pounds for an even greater health boost.

  • Try to integrate physical activity and movement into your life.
  • Each diet rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Make your portions smaller and eat slower.

If you’re a parent or grandparent with children, you should

  • Limit your child’s TV and computer time.
  • Encourage healthy snacking on fruits and vegetables.
  • Encourage activity during free time.

2. Exercise on a regular basis

This is one of the best ways to ensure that you’re staying healthy. Whilst it can be had sometimes to find the time, it’s important to try and fit in at least 30 minutes a day worth of physical activity and the more you can do, the better, but any amount is better than none.

You should try and choose activities that you enjoy doing, it doesn’t have to always be something incredibly strenuous, it could be a countryside walk or dancing!

Not only that, but you should try and set time aside each day to try and fit in that minimum 30 minutes you need, you know what time you might be able to squeeze in half an hour.

You don’t have to exercise by yourself, you can try and get a friend involved as well so you can keep each other motivated and going in the right direction towards that goal you’re both aiming for.

3. Don’t smoke

You’ll have this before, but if you do smoke, quitting can be absolutely the best thing for your health. Yes it can be incredibly hard, but it’s far from impossible, all you need to do is keep trying, it takes on average around six to seven tries before you quit for good.

Remember as well, that you’re not in this by yourself, you can talk to a health-care provider who will be able to advise you on what are the best things to do so you can quit, or join a quit-smoking program. It can be so much easier with others who constantly have your back and really encourage you.

4. Eat a healthy diet

The basics to a simple, healthy diet are relatively straightforward. You should focus mainly on fruits, vegetables and whole grains and try to keep red meats at a minimum. Not only that, but you should try and reduce the number of bad fats such as saturated and trans, and replace them with healthy fats, such as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated and finally, you should try and take multivitamins with folate every day because it’s a great nutritional insurance policy.

Try and make sure that fruits and vegetables are a staple of most of your daily meals and choose chicken, fish or beans over red meats. Even simple cuts such as swapping white rice for brown or using extra virgin olive oil instead or high saturated fat oils such as palm and coconut oil.

5. Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all

Moderate drinking is actually good for the heart as many of us already know, but it can also increase the risk of cancer occurring. If you don’t drink, don’t feel like you have to start and if you drink less than two drink a day then there’s no reason to stop, but people who drink more should consider cutting back. This could be simple things such as choosing non-alcoholic beverages at meals or parties, avoiding any occasion that is centred around alcohol or possibly talk to a health-care professional, there’s always someone to help.
