The Ash Grove Foundation in its ongoing series of “Beyond November” community events will honor the 45th Anniversary of The Resistance draft resisters movement with “Resistance Then, Resist Now!” on Sunday, October 25th at Arlington West in Santa Monica, 2:00 – 4:30 p.m.   Admission is free.  The event also honors Arlington West and Veterans for Peace.   Arlington West is a temporary memorial erected every Sunday on the beach by Veterans For Peace, immediately north of the Santa Monica Pier:

Beethoven Billy Bragg Ninth Concert

The North American premiere of Billy Bragg’s version of “Ode to Joy,” the choral finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony will take place Saturday, August 29th at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. The Asia America Youth Orchestra will perform the piece under the baton and musical direction of David Benoit. At the concert Bragg will perform and lead the audience in a sing-along of the choral. Santa Monica- June gloom was prominently featured on the morning of June 20th until the early afternoon. The day featured a noticeable mist. This didn’t dampen the resolve of hundreds gathered at Virginia Avenue Park for the 17th Annual Juneteenth Celebration-2009. This year’s theme was “A New Voice of Hope.”

Trastevere Almost A Travesty

On the corner of Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Boulevard stands a large imposing edifice housing an Italian restaurant named Trastevere Ristorante Italiano. The place is decorated in a fashion befitting a good old, authentic Italian restaurant. It has the plaster walls complete with cracks to give it that “Old World” feel. Included in the restaurant is an al fresco dining area and large front windows that fold open like old fire station doors that open the place up to make for a great dining experience.The food is prepared as one might expect. Santa Monica Festival-Greener and Greener

Santa Monica-I arrived at Clover Park at 2600 Ocean Park Blvd. just in time to catch the last couple of tunes performed by Masanga Marimba as they presented a set of popular music and dance of Zimbabwe and Latin America. I had the pleasure of seeing this group on two prior occasions-California Plaza during Grand Performances Concert Series and at Hollywood and Highland. The group has since recorded two CD’s- self titled Masanga Marimba Ensemble and Mas Masanga and added two energetic dancers Ronnie Daliyo and Julia Chiyambo.
