Hey, Can We Really Do That With Fountainhead?

By Marga, published on Feb 7, 2010

...will endure because it is a classic monument of and to human love and it was built to last.

What we know of today as Fountainhead started its life as an ordinary tract house in a plain and homogenized subdivision with the universal name of Sky Country. Its zip code is 89503 in Reno, Nevada. However, being on the north side of McCarran, Sky Country was commonly classified as New North West Reno 89523 zip code. Chino the Carpenter says Sky Country is a boring and poorly engineered subdivision. Reno allowed the subdivision to be designed wrong he complains. The streets and... (more)

Reno AAA: Where Our Members Don't Come First

By Marga, published on Jul 6, 2009

Recently I went to renew my 37-year membership with AAA. I had not received a renewal notice. I went to the Reno AT&T phone book but was unable to find any listing for AAA. I called the 800 number on my AAA membership card, 800-222-4357. I got a Don, not allowed to give last name or employee number. Don told me that there are two AAA locations in Reno, both in South Reno. 6795 S. Virginia and the other on Damonte Ranch Road. Both very way south. Not at all centrally located. AAA, where all members outside of South Reno don’t come at all at AAA.AAA has only one location in Sparks and that... (more)

Artown 2009 House Award

By Just Average Joe, published on Jul 6, 2009

Since Reno is Artown, I suggest that Artown add a couple more events. One being The Artown 2009 House Award and the other Artown 2009 Business Award. Here’s how I see it. Using the Northern Nevada Regional MLS area numbers, NNRMLS be a sponsor and the Northern Nevada/Reno-Sparks Board of Realtors should be the organizer, entries are nominated for each area. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place winners from each area will be chosen by each area’s Artown House/Business Award Committee. All committees must have one local art painter, sculptor, Realtor, Interior... (more)

June Contributor Of The Month - Morgana

By Digidave, published on Jun 25, 2009

Anyone that has been in the Broowaha community long enough will know and has interacted with Morgana. She is a wonderful force of nature and has herself been the topic of articles. In this featured contributor interview she recalls (as do I) when she first came on the scene and asked for a Reno chapter of Broowaha. Since then Morgana has helped turn the Reno Broowaha into an active hub of conversation.

How does where you live influence who/what you write about and how you go about doing it?That's a fitting question because landscape itself has a part in knitting people together.... (more)

Reno Housing Market Update For April

By Chance Gates, published on May 31, 2009

Sales are starting to increase especially in the under $150,000 range. The sale price remains under pressure from bank owned properties.

April had 419 properties sold compared to 366 in March. This makes 4 straight months of a positive swing in sale in the Reno - 100 Area. However, April saw a 6% drop in median price after three months of relative stability. Of the 419 sales in April 215 were bank owned and another 80 where short sales.

649 new listing came on the market in April a drop of 12% from March. 370 of these listing were either bank owned or a short sale.

Rudy The Sequel

By Ed Attanasio, published on Sep 27, 2008

This movie is significant to me because I happen to knowmy very-ownreal-life Rudy. His name is Christopher Gurries, and he is the son of my best friend from high school. Chris walked-on at Notre Dame and miraculously made the team. A star at Bishop Manogue High School in Reno, he was a very good football player. Since no major Division I colleges recruited him, he decided to not play football and attend Notre Dame.

During his freshman year, Gurries walked on and although he didn’t make the team that time, he didn’t give up, either. This... (more)

The Great White Hype

By Invisible African, published on Aug 29, 2008 the murky world of modern racism, where most of the open animus has been replaced by a shadowy bias that is difficult to measure,” Charles Blow wrote in The New York Times.

There was no difficulty measuring the animus on July 4, 1910, when thousands of white Americans swarmed Reno, Nevada, to witness Jim Jeffries snatch the title away from Jack Johnson. Hailed as the “great white hope,” Jeffries said he was “going into the fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro.”

He had a captive audience.

“At ringside, a band ... (more)
