Überband, from Los Angeles is The Greatest Rock Band Ever. Just ask the lead singer, RyThoJo. On 17 October, I was granted an audience with him at DiPiazza in Long Beach. How did Überband become the greatest rock band ever? Überband became the greatest rock band ever by sheer fate. I don’t know how we became the greatest. We just decided that we were. And various people over time have started to agree with us. We decided to allow them to have that thought. Very big of you. The name started as a joke. We’re Überband. We’re the mightiest. Then we started to play more and we... (more)
What is Pure'n Talent? In the end, it's a state of mind. Basically, bands that just go balls-out on stage, bands that have good songs. It's an attitude. We put on any kind of music anywhere, anytime. We're not genre-specific. We're very likely to do a show that's a combination of bluegrass, soul if I could find it, which I can't, metal, punk, blues, rock, rap, country, bluegrass, rockabilly, psychobilly, garage rock, glam rock. You can see three, four, or five different genres in one night. Pure n Talent does have its war cry we announce at our shows. We say "Death to emo", because their mutant... (more)
Bravo, USC. You have done it. I don't know how, but you have managed to get every poll voter wrapped around your little finger. On Saturday you went out on your home field and lost to a 40+ point underdog. And you dropped only five spots in the polls. On the flip side, Wisconsin went on the road and lost to previously unranked Illinois (5-1). The Badgers dropped ten spots from #5 to #15. Your most impressive win is against Nebraska who is currently out of the Top 25. You know who else can make that claim? Missouri. They haven't lost yet. They beat Nebraska by thirty-five points and they... (more)
Musicians have a great tradition of coming together for a worthy cause. That tradition continues Sunday 14 October with the Heart Full of Soul rock and roll fundraiser to benefit Isaiah Reyes (pictured with mother Gina, left, and Aunt Vicky, right). In April, Isaiah was taken to the emergency room with a supposed migraine. The CT scan revealed that two blood clots on the brain and Isaiah was diagnosed with leukemia. The Heart Full of Soul was put together to help pay for expenses not covered by Isaiah's insurance. In addition to classic cars and a fashion show by the Classic Glamour Dolls, this... (more)
Graffiti Blues is a multi-genre trio from Long Beach. I met the three AMs (Aaron Monroe, Alonso Moreno, and Argenis Moreno) at Javatini's Espresso in Seal Beach. You recently changed your name from Aaron and the Morenos. Why the name change? (Alonso) Because Aaron’s not the only one in the band. That’s why. (laughs) (Aaron) We’ve been changing it for a while, just trying to find a good name, something we like. We’ve probably had five names. (Alonso) The first one was Makaveli. That didn’t work out too well. (Aaron) Everyone liked it but… (Argenis) Too Tupac. It was... (more)
Bourbon Road is a blues band from Orange County. I met up with "Cleanhead" Joe McGaha and Scott "Lucky" Hudson at Lamppost Pizza in Ladera Ranch on 19 September. I noticed you guys have played reggae, heavy metal, lots of different styles. How did you move from playing reggae and heavy metal to blues? (Joe McGaha) Do you want to go with that first? (Scott Hudson) You know, I think you take a bunch of different talents. You get a bunch of blues guys, and I don’t mean this in a negative way, you get kind of a stagnant sound, or maybe a predictable sound. But if you bring something from... (more)
John Sotter (“Acoustic Warriorâ€) is a San Clemente singer-songwriter who performs locally but has also performed in countries around the world. I met up with him on Thursday 30 August 2007 and conducted the interview on his front porch. I know you’ve traveled all over. If there were one place you’d name as your favorite, what would it be? I had a great time in most of the places that I visited. I was a really big fan of New Zealand. There’s Auckland and Christchurch which are kind of small cities compared to Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco, but beyond that it’s all just... (more)
