Dreamgirls is all the RAGE on Santa Monica.

by C. Reagan (writer), WEST HOLLYWOOD, August 31, 2006

It's Tuesday night. You've had a tough day "workin' hard for the money". You need a drink. You need a little bit of entertainment and "Roseanne" re-runs just won't suffice. You are longing for some good-ole' fashioned singing and dancing! You call up a few girls (or flamboyant guys) and put on your most cliche outfits. You are on your way to RAGE's Dreamgirls Drag Show Extravaganza!

Located at 7994 Santa Monica Blvd., RAGE hosts an array of female impersonators that glorify all that it is to be fabulous and queer in Southern California. These Queens aren't the ones your mama used to throw singles at. In fact, they work the stage better than most performers who don't have their private parts strapped down. (Take a lesson Britney!)

I attended the show last week, when the theme was "Superheros". The doormen were polite, stamping my hand with what turned out to look like a pink lipstick kiss after I handed over the $5 cover. The bar is large, two stories, and boasts a "loft" like upper section in which you can watch the festivities from above. This area is essentially reserved for those patrons (like I)who did not make a reservation for one of the tables in front of the stage on the first level. The bar is located on the first level and is manned by muscular guys just itching to work a martini shaker. Although somewhat pricey, ($8 for a rail drink/$5 for a bottled beer), the drinks are strong and the service is friendly and professional.

The show is almost indescriable. Many people think that once you've seen one dragshow you've seen em all. This is so not the case at RAGE. I witnessed, in a single evening, powerful performances by Catwoman, Supergirl, Sailor Moon, a Power Puff Girl, and Electra! Catwoman began and ended her performance in a steel cage while suited up in shiny black pleather. Supergirl stole the show it seemed, but this was due in large part to the audience being chock-full of fanboys sporting assorted t-shirts displaying the Superman Shield. My personal highlight of the evening was an apperance by none other than my childhood hero, She-Ra. Although larger than I remember her from my younger years, she worked the stage proclaiming, "By the power of Greyskull, I am SHE-RA!!!" in a way that only a child who's father made him keep his She-Ra mask in the garage can appreciate. All-in-all a spectacular evening!

To make reservations, check out the website, or give RAGE a ring at 310.652.7055. Dress code is casual and the show starts around 10:30 or 11:00. Seating for those with reservations starts at 10:00. See ya there!

Lol, that's hillarious! I'd love to see that some time! Not sure if it's totally my scene but it sounds like something I'd be talking about for a long time after!
