I hate to admit this, but I was worried about Sarah Palin’s speech yesterday. All the negative media attention she has garnered in the last few days has been a boost to the Democrats and provided a question mark about if John McCain’s judgement is really there. So, I worried, if she does a good job, she would surely take away some of that boost.
Fortunately, it turns out I don’t have anything to worry about. To the Republican base, Sarah “Barracuda” Palin did everything Right, if you will pardon the pun. She “rallied her base” and attacked the Democrats for their “liberal media and empty promises.” She attacked her opponent for his “lack of experience” and even called herself, what was it? Oh right, a “Pit-bull with lipstick”.
However, what she also did while shouting from her high horse, was alienate independent voters and other voters who were looking at the Republicans for a reason to vote for them. She insulted “community organizers” by saying they do not do anything and implied that any American that isn’t a Republican is unpatriotic. She also attacked Barack Obama’s wife after he has very graciously said this week with the revelation that Palin’s daughter is pregnant, that family is off limits. It would have been so easy for the Democrats to say how ironic it is that Republicans preach abstinence only education and then provide a prime example that it doesn’t work. But they did not, preferring to instead let Palin dig her own grave.
And why not talk about Flip-Flops, as Republicans so love to do with Democrats. According to a fact check article from the Associated Press, she only opposed the “Bridge to Nowhere” AFTER she found out how unpopular it was.
Despite what many believe, being the mayor of 7,000 and the governor of a state of 700,000 for 18 months does not provide more experience than working with the people as a “community organizer” and being in the State Senate of a state of 13 million and in the U.S. Senate for 4 years (even if many would like to say two of those years were spent campaigning).
After reading many news sites message boards today, I was surprised to see just how many people were seriously turned off by her, even though I guess I shouldn’t have been. People were looking to the Republicans to motivate people, not insult people. The Republicans spent the night mocking the Democrats, conveniently forgetting about the awful economy their administration has created and trying to invoke fear into Americans, as usual. Palin did not mention any of the things that Americans want to hear about how that administration would fix the problems of the country and instead used the same abuse and sarcasm that Republicans have always used to dumb down their message for voters. People can say the same about Democrats if they want to, and I am sure they will, but the truth is that most people don’t want to play these kinds of politics anymore.
The sexism argument is just a way for people to try and make the media shut up. It is not sexist to question her experience and it is not sexist to say she is not the right choice for America. The truth is, no politician is perfect, we know that. But to put this woman out there as the best choice for VP and have her attack the way she did is not the change this country is asking for.

It amazes me how republican's spend more time insulting democrats, than they do focusing on the issues...
