In the case of being stopped, breathalysed and caught, pleading ignorance to the law will not help you.

Limits for Blood Alchohol Content (BAC) when driving differ throughout the world. It is important, aside from following local road laws by familiarising yourself with speed limits, signs and other protocols, that you always also acquaint yourself with the different drink driving limits abroad. After all, what is a completely acceptable blood alcohol limit in your home country may be punishable by a hefty fine or even jail time elsewhere. The United Kingdom, for example, has one of the more tolerant alcohol limits across the world, let alone across the European continent. In the case of being stopped, breathalysed and caught, pleading ignorance to the law will not help you.

BAC Limits and Staying Within the Law

Although you should research every aspect of driving law specific to the country you are visiting, sometimes it can get confusing, particularly if you are visiting more than one country on your road trip. In general, Eastern European countries tend to have stricter — near zero — limits on alcohol levels. This may come as no surprise as these countries tend to have the most problems with alcohol. By comparison, Southern Mediterranean countries come in as more lenient but still stricter than the UK, followed by more relaxed laws as you move up the continent. However, these are generalisations and looking at the infographic should prove useful for each particular case. As with varying alcohol limits per country, the punishment is also differentially approached depending on the European state. Some countries will jail you for even a trace amount of alcohol, some will fine you heavily for twice as much alcohol and some will nullify your license altogether.
