What to wear to Belmont Park

The final race of the Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes, which takes place each year in June at Belmont Park race track. If you are planning a visit to the prestigious Belmont Stakes or another event at the race track, you will no doubt want to look your best. But being stylish shouldn’t come at the sacrifice of comfort, as you are likely to be on your feet for large parts of the day. Outfits for both men and women should be respectable and comply with the dress code for the areas you will be visiting. This easy-to-follow outfit guide for men and women will make deciding what to wear to Belmont Park simple.

Belmont Park outfits for men

In some areas of Belmont Park, men can only wear shirts with long sleeves and a collar. Check the official dress code below before your event. A navy, black or grey suit with a white shirt is a classic outfit for men – add an eye-catching pocket square or contrasting tie to add interest.

A colorful shirt will also add a pop of color. If a full suit is not your style, tailored pants or smart chinos with a fitted jacket is a more relaxed option, but avoid denim and track pants. Oxfords and Derby shoes are the obvious choice to complete the look, but brogues or dark suede desert boots can add a modern edge. Stay clear of trainers and tennis shoes as they are not appropriate and may mean you are not allowed entry.

Belmont Park outfits for women

A figure-skimming shift dress or more structured midi dress, complemented by a hat or fascinator, is the quintessential racetrack look. Block colors and classic floral print dresses are both good options. Black and white is a fail-safe combination for the race track, try a simple black midi skirt and white chiffon blouse for easy elegance and add statement monochrome accessories to add interest.

A black and white print dress is another sophisticated option. With comfort in mind, it’s best to wear lightweight fabrics in the summer months – cottons and breezy silks are both good choices. Linen is another option, if the style of the dress is appropriate.

Once you have chosen your dress, you can pick your shoes and accessories to match. A sleek clutch bag is a good option if you don’t want to be carrying a heavy bag on your shoulder. Wearing a hat is a racetrack tradition – if you don’t want to wear a hat and feel that a fascinator is too dated, you can wear a bow or silk headscarf to nod towards the tradition.

Even though it can be tempting to wear an elegant high heel, it is unadvisable as you are likely to be uncomfortable and will not enjoy the day fully. If you have to wear high heels, choose a block heel over a stiletto – these are much more turf and grass friendly, and you want to avoid getting stuck in the mud! Flat sandals, ballet pumps and wedges are the best styles to choose.
