Fish oil

Oil is almost unavoidable while cooking and considering the harm with most other oils, fish oil seems to be a great alternative.

You’ve probably heard all about it, but yet have never ventured deep into understanding the multi-faceted benefits fish oil provides. Fish oil is the oil which is derived from the tissues of oily fish such as trout, mackerel, tuna, herring, sardines, and salmon. As more and more people gear towards a healthy lifestyle, ‘weighing’ carefully what they eat, fish oil has become a highly-recommended constituent of a healthy diet. It contains the omega-3 fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Many of the claims in favour of fish oil are under tight scrutiny, with the research studies not supporting many of them for a large group of sample population.

But nonetheless, statistics are often known to lie. Hence, it becomes imperative for us to know these coveted benefits before we go on picking them apart, and testing for credibility.

  1. For a Healthier Heart:

Certain studies have bolstered the claim that heart very high level of omega-3 fatty acids can prevent build-up of cholesterol in the arteries, lowering the risk of heart diseases. Researchers also attributed the lower rate of heart diseases in Japan to their high consumption of omega-3 rich fish. What will be of particular interest to you all will be the skewed ratio of meat consumption and fish consumption in U.S.A. and Canada, where meat consumption is abnormally high in comparison to fish consumption. This has raised warning bells as the omega-3 deficiency is known to cause a lot of health issues. A group of American kids didn’t do well on eye tests if their mothers had been deficient on omega-3 fatty acids while pregnant.

  2. For a Metal-Strong Memory and Mental Health:

Several researches have established a strong positive correlation between fish-oil supplements and cognitive functioning. Also, marked differences have been observed between the brain structures of the fish users and the non-fish users. Besides acting as a stimulus to both strong memory and quick thinking, it can also aid young people projecting behavioral problems, especially ADHD. A certain research also revealed that omega-3 fatty acids may be effective for reducing the risk of psychosis.

  3. As a Pregnancy Pal

Increased intake of EPA and DHA has been shown to prevent pre-term labour, and possibly increase the birth weight. Fish oil consumed during pregnancy may help women to recuperate from post-martum depression. Additionally, it may reduce an infant’s sensitization to common food allergens, and lower the prevalence and severity of certain skin diseases in the first year of infancy. Omega-3, a vital component of fish oil, if used after pregnancy is known to help in formation of breast milk.

  4. For Preventing Diabetes:

Fish oil may help reduce the risk of diabetes from developing cognitive deficit because it protects the hippocampus cells from destroying. A study also proved that fish oil could effectively help reverse one of the root causes of type II diabetes, oxidative stress.

  5. For Combating Cancer:

For cancer, fish oil has been understood to be extremely miraculous. Not only does it boost the performance of conventional cancer drugs, but is also an effective standalone therapy. Several studies have backed the claims that fish oil has helped in killing various cancers including prostate, colon, and breast. Although the views of the researches on the nature of correlation between prostate cancer and fish oil have been contradicting, most have found the relationship to be positive.

  6. For Building Bone Strength:

If you’re one of those people who rely only on supplements of Vitamin D, calcium and magnesium to maintain high bone density, then you need to immediately add omega-3 fatty acid DHA to your list. Fish oil is essential for optimal bone health as it increases bone content.

The above mentioned benefits are just few of the benefits fish oil provides; the list is enormous. It’s also true that the validity of many of the benefits is still clouded by doubt, and several contradicting researches have further complicated the matter, but mostly the results have favoured higher fish oil consumption, although obviously in a limit.

Sadly though, North Americans are deficient on omega-3, which has been identified as the sixth largest killer of Americans, a figure surely astounding.
