Hospitality Means Keeping the Coffee Ready

by S. Vaughan (writer), Bay Shore, December 30, 2013

A well-worn traveler in the old western movies happens upon a cabin where smoke billows from the chimney and he or she are invited in to rest and have a cup of coffee.

Believe it or not this is the third attempt I have made at trying to write this article. Maybe it's because I am at a loss for words that clearly express my exquisite delight in the family and friends in my life. This is due in part to just returning from a friend' party. Being in her home is very comfortable for me. I get a kick (not literally) from playing with one of her dogs who has one brown eye and one blue one. At first I thought it was the lighting in the room or maybe the liquid in my cup. But nope, it was Bruno's eyes!

To me, taking time to share wonderful times with family and friends is a gift. Intimate conversations, questions of the heart that stimulate the mind, putting our feet under a loved one's kitchen table all enrich my life. It's part of all that rich stuff that make up hospitality.

Being hospitable isn't always an easy thing but it definitely adds to my life. There are times I've been tired or not feeling well and someone will call or stop by which makes me have to use tact in a hospitable way. The more I practice being hospitable the more the meaning of the word becomes clear. It embodies warmth, neighborliness, kindness, entertainment, etc. Hence, the thought of a well-worn traveler that is shown kindness in a simple offer of refreshments to help them continue on their way.

Over the years I've learned a lot about myself over a good cup of coffee. But even if you're not a coffee drinker that's ok, there are still plenty of "cabins" as you too journey through life. So stop on by I'm keeping the coffee ready.

I too have many memories over "coffee dates" . The Mom's in my survey years ago , it was our source of sanity in many ways. Well written. :)

Hi Barbara! Hope you are enjoying this new year. Thanks for taking time to read and comment on my articles. I have so many ideas and at times let my perfectionism hinder me. I belong to several writing groups so it helps to have fellow writers such as yourself know the "work" it takes to follow through on a consistent basis.

Your welcome, my pleasure. I understand, I can sometimes be too much of a perfectionist myself. Happy New Year to you too.
