Cheap Ways to Improve the Air Quality in Your Home

Everyone knows that we can only do so much to help reduce the air toxicity in our outside environment. If you live in the city that pollution and low air quality quadruple due to all the vehicles, factories, companies, etc. We can all do our part to help recycle, walk or bike, buy local foods, all to support living a greener lifestyle and hopefully help reduce the number of toxins we add to the environment. But although we are limited to how we help outside, there are lots of ways to improve the Air Quality in your home, and without breaking the bank.

Houseplants

This has got to be the simplest way to improve your air quality – plants! You have a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Aim for more green if you can, these plants will help filter the air you breathe and will add a pop of color to your home.

Organics

This may not have come to mind when thinking air quality but think about the food you bring into your home. A lot of fruit and vegetables are covered in pesticides that can be quite harmful to the environment. Try shopping organic and living a more sustainable lifestyle to help avoid this.

Humidity

If your home has a damp feel to it anywhere, then there is a chance that you could potentially develop mold as it thrives in damp spaces. You will want to remove any excess moisture if you can. The best way to do this is by investing in a good dehumidifier. Yes, some can be very noisy and keep you up at night, however, you can also get some with very little noise output so as not to disturb your sleep and keep your house nice and moisture free. Then there is the flip side of things, is your house to dry? Do you find your skin drying out, or flu-like symptoms? If so then add some moisture to your air through either a hot or cold humidifier and enjoy the comforts of your own home.

Pets

If you have cats or dogs, you know for a fact that there is hair, dander, dust, and dirt following them everywhere you go. You will want to stay on top of their maintenance, more so in dogs than cats. Brush them down to help avoid loose hair fall around your house and be aware of the moisture levels of their skin. If their skin is dry they will lose more dander, so help keep them healthy with good food choices and topical skin care if needed.

Cleaning Products

Some cleaning products have harsh chemicals in them, and although they are labeled as safe, you are still adding those chemicals to the air you breathe. Try to use more eco-friendly products that are safe and natural. Don’t worry they will still keep your house clean and fresh, just without adding any bad to your environment? If you're worried about buying cleaning products altogether, then make your own! There is a fantastic Essential Oil blend called Thieves, it is actually proven to kill more bacteria than the regular hand sanitizer. You can mix it with water and put it in a spray bottle, you can add some to pure-castile soap and top it up with water to make hand soap for in your bathroom. Mix some with baking soda to scrub the grime off your tub. There is always an option to go more natural.

Open Up

One of the most common-sense approach methods to improving air quality is to open the windows and let the fresh air flow through so that you’re not breathing the same stale air all the time, however, you can’t exactly do that in the winter now, can you? You also have to be aware of where exactly you are living, sometimes opening the windows are not your best option at all however, there are ventilators that fit into your window and clean and filter the air from outside so that the air that does enter your home is free of pollens, allergens and other chemicals that you don’t want in your home. So, if you can, open them up, if you can’t then choose some of the other options listed.

Conclusion

Just because you live somewhere that doesn’t have the greatest air quality doesn’t mean that you can’t create good air quality in your home. If you’re looking to go green and are becoming more aware of the air you breathe, implement some or all of these items into your home and you will have a much healthier, safer environment for you and your loved ones.
