Series-We The People-Call Congress Stop $$ War #31

by Rose Mountain (writer), , December 12, 2007

A new bill is looming, along with 92 Congressmembers We must keep pressure on Congress to stop funding illegal invasion & occupation of Iraq for oil.

A Congressional bill with funding for Iraq was postponed Monday and again Tuesday, peace activists must call Congress now and stay alert for a possible vote before they leave for the holiday. We must demand they vote NO on funding any Iraq bill unless it pays for troops and subcontractors to come home. Below is news, actions, resources for readers, including a letter sent earlier this year by 92 progressive Congressmembers to Bush saying they will no longer fund the war, and a recent letter to House Speaker Pelosi. Plus breaking news below on Kucinich preparing documents to impeach Bush too, impeach bill for Cheney is now in House Judiciary Committee, see Article #28 at

Obey said he will hew the current budget to conform to Bush's request by shaving earmarks, as well as the president's priority projects and it will include NO funding for Iraq or Afghanistan. Although a welcome respite for peace activists, this battle is far from over. Please keep the pressure on by following through with the action: Please take immediate action--Now! As most members of the Senate and the House are preparing to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace with their loved ones, they will likely vote to fund more death and destruction in Iraq. Please ask your member of Congress again, to vote NO on any additional funds for Iraq that are not tied to a safe, swift and orderly withdrawal of U.S. troops and contractors from Iraq. Send email to your senators and representative saying “Peace is Possible, if you vote No.”

If we can just get Obey to rip some Republican's head off screaming that he won't fund any occupation if he doesn't want to, we'll be home free. UPDATE 2: Even wants a filibuster!! UPDATE: The Republicans in the Senate think they have 60 votes for $70 billion, so any Senator who claims to oppose the occupation needs to step up now and filibuster or forever hold their peace. *PROGRESSIVE CONGRESS MEMBERS OPEN LETTERS TO BUSH Ninety-two members of Congress already signed an open letter to President Bush pledging that they "will only support appropriating additional funds for U.S. military operations in Iraq. . .for the protection and safe redeployment of all our troops out of Iraq."

First letter sent July 19 with follow-up letter October 15,2007. "Text of Open Letter to President Bush: No More Funds for War Oct 15, 2007" Below is letter sent to President Bush July 19:

Dear Mr. President:

We are writing to inform you that we will only support appropriating additional funds for U.S. military operations in Iraq during Fiscal Year 2008 and beyond for the protection and safe redeployment of all our troops out of Iraq before you leave office.

More than 3,600 of our brave soldiers have died in Iraq. More than 26,000 have been seriously wounded. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed or injured in the hostilities and more than 4 million have been displaced from their homes. Furthermore, this conflict has degenerated into a sectarian civil war and U.S. taxpayers have paid more than $500 billion, despite assurances that you and your key advisors gave our nation at the time you ordered the invasion in March, 2003 that this military intervention would cost far less and be paid from Iraqi oil revenues.

We agree with a clear and growing majority of the American people who are opposed to continued, open-ended U.S. military operations in Iraq, and believe it is unwise and unacceptable for you to continue to unilaterally impose these staggering costs and the soaring debt on Americans currently and for generations to come.

*LETTER TO PELOSI HOUSE SPEAKER by Out of Iraq Caucus & CPC Chairs. PDA Website by National News RSS Feed

December 7, 2007
The following letter from Reps. Maxine Waters, Lynne Woolsey, and Barbara Lee was sent to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and the House Leadership today:

Dear Madame Speaker, Majority Leader, Majority Whip, Democratic Caucus Chairman, and Democratic Caucus Vice-Chairman:

As leaders of the Progressive Caucus and Out of Iraq Caucus, we write to urge you not to include funding for the continued military occupation of Iraq in any Fiscal Year 2008 omnibus spending bill unless it requires these funds to be used solely for fully-funding the safe and timely redeployment of our troops and military contractors from Iraq within a specified timeline. Should legislation come to the House floor that does not strictly limit funding to protecting our troops and a timeline for commencing and completing their complete redeployment out of Iraq, we will not be able to support such a bill. (See attached official position of the Progressive Caucus on Iraq plus related letter to President Bush co-signed by 92 House Members.)

After almost five years, nearly 4000 lives of our brave service men and women, and approximately half-a-trillion dollars spent, it is past time for the US occupation of Iraq to end.

The basic reality is that the only way to end the violence against US forces and bring stability to Iraq and the region is to declare that forces will be redeployed from Iraq as soon and safely as is possible and that we have no designs to have an indefinite military presence there. In fact, over the last year, the President has signed provisions into law four times that state the US will not have a long-term military presence in Iraq.

Additionally, the American public is ahead of Congress on this point. More than half of those polled in recent weeks want US troops home as soon as possible (USA Today/Gallup) with nearly 60 percent wanting the engagement to end on a specified timeline (Pew).

Instead of providing the President a blank check--or worse, lowering the bar on conditions--we urge you to build on the $50 billion down payment on redeployment (H.R. 4156) that the House passed on November 14 and adhere to the assurances we were given by House Democratic leaders at that time that no more votes would be taken this session to provide additional funding for U.S. military operation in Iraq. It is critical that we keep faith with the clear majority of Americans who voted us into the majority last year to end the disastrous U.S. military intervention in Iraq, use the momentum we have gained to end our occupation of Iraq and bring our troops and military contractors home, and strictly fence any additional appropriated funds accordingly."

12/11/07 "House Democrats Pull Budget Offer
The GOP Is Negotiating In Bad Faith, Obey Says" By Jonathan Weisman, Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, December 11, 2007; Page A03 (excerpt)"A Democratic deal to give President Bush some war funding in exchange for additional domestic spending appeared to collapse last night after House Appropriations Committee Chairman David R. Obey (D-Wis.) accused Republicans of bargaining in bad faith. Instead, Obey said he will push a huge spending bill that would hew to the president's spending limit by stripping it of all lawmakers' pet projects, as well as most of the Bush administration's top priorities. It would also contain no money for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. "Absent a Republican willingness to sit down and work out a reasonable compromise, I think we ought to end the game and go to the president's numbers," Obey said. "I was willing to listen to the argument that we ought to at least add more for Afghanistan, but when the White House refuses to compromise, when the White House continues to stick it in our eye, I say to hell with it." House Democratic leaders were scheduled to complete work last night on a $520 billion spending bill that included $11 billion in funding for domestic programs above the president's request, half of what Democrats had initially approved. The bill would have also contained $30 billion for the war in Afghanistan, upon which the Senate would have added billions more for Iraq before final congressional approval. But a stern veto threat this weekend from White House budget director Jim Nussle put the deal in jeopardy, and Obey said he is prepared for a long standoff with the White House." (excerpt)

*Via "A Year Later, Even Wants the Dems to Filibuster the Occupation Funding!" {Email to MoveOn Members a nationwide grassroots group of 3.2 million} 12/12/07- "Dear MoveOn member,According to the New York Times, Democrats in Congress are poised to cave in and give President Bush another blank check for the war in Iraq.1 Just a few weeks ago Democratic leaders like Majority Leader Reid vowed not to allow any more funding for the war in Iraq without timelines that would start bringing our troops home. Now, they're considering backing down completely. As a Senator and a Presidential candidate, Senator Hillary Clinton has a lot of influence with other Democrats in Congress. If she steps out and vows to block this deal, other Democrats will follow her. We've heard Sen. Clinton talk a lot about why she's the strongest leader when it comes to ending the war in Iraq. Now's an opportunity for her to show us through action—and right now, action is what matters most. Can you call Sen. Clinton and tell her that you're expecting her to speak out against this move and lead the Senate to block it? Here's where to call: Clinton's Presidential Campaign: (703) 469-2008 Senators Clinton, Dodd and Obama have already pledged to vote against any funding bill without a firm timetable for withdrawal.2 But it's not enough to just vote "no," knowing that, at the end of the day, the president will still get billions more for war. Sen. Clinton needs to step up and lead a filibuster to make sure the only funding that passes the Senate includes a binding exit plan for our troops. This is an uphill battle, to be sure. But difficult moments call for courageous leadership. Already, more than 15,000 veterans and military family members have signed on to a petition urging the Presidential candidates in the Senate to block additional funding for the war if it doesn't include a timeline for exit. Nancy in Vermont has a son who served in Iraq, and she can't afford to wait until the next administration to see real leadership on the war. This is what she said: "I want you to ENSURE that my son, an active duty Army National Guard Iraq Veteran will NOT have to do a second tour in this war based on lies. Promise to BLOCK any funding that does not bring ALL our troops home in a safe and timely manner" Voters across the country are counting on Democrats to stand up to President Bush on Iraq. More than 2/3 of Americans don't want to give Bush all the funding he asks for.3 And 60 percent want a timetable to bring our troops home—the highest support for withdrawal since the war began.4 The presidential candidates have the national spotlight—so they're in a perfect position to lead the opposition to this terrible deal. We can't afford to wait until 2009 to start winding down the war in Iraq. We need leadership now. Can you call Senator Hillary Clinton and ask her to block any funding without a timetable to start bringing our troops home? Political Action Team December 10th, 2007

Thanks Supportive Readers, Article #32 "Breaking News Impeachment" is now in political section under other articles. For those of you who can please give it Votes & Reviews. The breaking news is that Congressman Wexler in the Judiciary Comm and others are now pushing to begin hearings on Cheney, and Kucinich is now putting together more documents to impeach Bush. Remember Congressman Conyers of Judiciary Comm a few years ago compiled evidence (before new crimes) in document "Constitution In Crisis" published as book "George W. Bush versus The U.S. Constitution". Conyers also had bills to impeach both Bush & Cheney with over 120 Congresspeople co-sponsoring. Congresspeople take an oath of office to defend the Constitution, so they have no choice, which is what we need to remind them, however millions of We The People know more information than some of the Congresspeople because we've been getting the raw documents since the media has been censoring them and censoring the whistleblowers, plus the Bush Admin has been lying and manipulating Congress too, which Conyers and Kucinich included in their Articles of Impeachment. Congressman Wexler is asking the public to sign a petition that they want to move forward with impeaching Cheney, the petition got the needed signatures in one day, but the more the better. See Article #32 for link. Petitions are a reminder that the national polls keep showing the majority want both Bush & Cheney impeached, as a top priority, and for feelings of safety. Conyers did Petitions with the public too, with certain questions and evidence against the Admin, then Conyers delivered them to the White House. First Conyers held a press conference then delivered the boxes of petitions. The White House guards were shocked to see how many boxes kept coming through the White House gates, each filled with petitions from We The People. A beautiful sight of the Power Of The People.

TO MY SUPPORTIVE READERS--Thought I'd copy this here to bring more faith & light during these dark times... Credo in New York wrote a wonderful article about how children need a mother's love so that our society can be filled with loving beings, and here's my Comment under his article. "Credo I'm so glad you wrote an article on the Power of Love, that's what I hoped to write about as I evolve my Series. This wonderful statement of yours contains the essence of what I've always known.. "Everything that we do in our lives we do it for love or a lack thereof." The entire world can be understood by the presence or lack of love, and it can be healed with the heart of compassion... Like you and millions of others in the world I can sense the full presence of love and compassion or the lack thereof by degree, within all human endeavors--in individuals and the ways people think/feel, relationships, groups, social systems, social policies, governments, businesses, the corporate climate, academic frameworks for all subjects like economics, history, and psychology, the architecture of cities and buildings, the resonances of music, etc etc My experience has led me to see that there are two components at work, 1) wounding from childhood which continues into adulthood until healed, 2) the degree to which one is born heart-evolved. If one has worked with children and chimpanzees you know that love & compassion & forgiveness are natural gifts we're all born with. So it becomes clear how many wounded emotional attitudes are taught by society & parents, like racism, sexism, greed, selfishness, etc etc Yet many people have a gift of being deeply loving and compassionate which often persists regardless of upbringing, and others have the gift of love with the heart courage to lead a nation, like Martin Luther King Jr & Gandhi, etc As they say--"Either Love is present in our every act and word, our every thought, or it is not. And to the degree that Love is absent or waning, so too our healing is diminished and postponed. For love heals people--the ones who give it and the ones who receive it." The courage to heal is rooted in the heart, healing requires honesty and emotional authenticity with oneself and then others, then we can heal our society and the world.

UPDATES FOR SUPPORTIVE READERS--TUES 12/18 The newest article #32 "Breaking News Impeachment" has again been knocked off the newspaper for the 3rd time since published yesterday, and is in the archives, it needs your Votes & Reviews to come back & stay in the Political Section so everyone can read it. Look in box at titles of articles, if the title of Article #32 isn't showing then click on "more" at bottom of box, to look through archives of everyone's past articles. BREAKING NEWS in Article #32 is that Congressman Wexler and others are now pushing for the Judiciary Comm to begin the impeachment hearings for Cheney, and Congressman Kucinich is putting together the documents to impeach Bush too. Wexler has a new website and has asked the public to sign the petition to show their support for Cheney impeachment hearings(as national polls have shown for years, despite mainstream media censoring most of the evidence to impeach). The website got the needed 50,000 votes/signatures in one day, as is now at 95,879 but the more the better, here's the link MORE BACKGROUND INFO.... Remember Congressman Conyers a couple years ago collected more than enough evidence for Bush & Cheney impeachment,in Report "Constitution in Crisis", published as book "George W.Bush versus US Constitution". Conyers book includes the key documents and much evidence. (like I've provided in Series-We The People, Article #4 is the main article that covers the Iraq Lies & manipulations which the Articles of Impeachment for Bush & Cheney will deal with, also see Articles #7,#8,#9) Conyers collected the British leaked Downing Street Documents and held Hearings on the first one called the Downing Street Memo, and he also has other leaked documents, investigations and whistleblower testimonies, etc etc. Conyers got 120 co-sponsors in Congress for impeaching Bush & Cheney, and collected 500,000 signatures on petitions from the public. And this was all before the last couple years of Bush Admin lies, manipulations and crimes. Conyers worked with the online activist community to put together a timeline of the raw evidence showing what was really happening covertly VS what the Bush Admin told the US public, the Congress and the media. Article #9 includes a paragraph explaining the Congressional Downing Street Hearing that the Democrats held on behalf of the American public, and the Republicans refused to attend. The Republican leaders even refused to allow them to use a room to hold the Hearings. It was like no room for Jesus, so they found a barn.... the Democrats had to meet in the basement, the ceilings were low, the room was so small it was ridiculous, everyone trying to cram into the small space, but C-SPAN was there so the public could watch it on TV if you were lucky enough to know about it, and Congressman Conyers kept a video tape of the hearing on his website. During the Hearing the Republican leaders even arranged last minute House Hearings to force the Democrats to run back to the House floor to vote on insignificant bills. But the testimonies were amazing, I included brief descriptions in Article #9, the former CIA Ray McGovern was there, and former Ambassador Wilson was there talking about the deceptions about the Iraq/Niger ties that the Bush Admin kept telling the world, and how they outed his wife Valerie Plame Wilson. Plus one Congressman testified how one person from Bush Admin either Rumsfeld or Wolfowitz I think Rumsfeld took 10 Congressmembers of the Intelligence Committee into the Pentagon and showed them slides of what they alleged were real satellite photos of Iraq's WMD which the Bush Admin had fabricated!! And later whistleblowers from the Pentagon explained how they watched people manipulating and fabricating things. The Bush Admin got people in there who had no expertise, one worker reported that the new people were shown in as the longtime professionals were being asked to relinquish their jobs, they were trying to train the new people with no experience in staellite photos. One of the new guys said Look there's something, looks like a factory for weapons. The longtime expert was shocked and horrified, he said that's an Iraqi children's schoolbus, look carefully, this is what they look like. But after that day the training of the new employees was over, and the Bush Admin succeeded in controlling the fabrications of intelligence, at least for awhile. In Article #7 the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Director of Nonproliferation (Of Weapons Of Mass Destruction WMD) testified in the Senate Intelligence Committee on the Bush Admin manipulation of US pre-war Intelligence on Iraq. In Article #9 is a copy of an article by the Director saying that everything the Bush Admin said was a lie. And also saying that the Congressional Senate Report of that Hearing ended up whitewashing the Bush Admin actions, inotherwords they said that it wasn't the Admin fault. But I watched the hearings on C-SPAN, I saw how shocked the Senators were. The lone Republican Congressman there, said he was ashamed he was the only Republican that chose to show-up to the Hearing. You could see how shocked he was when he heard the testimony by the Carnegie Endowment, and he later said how shocked he was, and then he apologized for himself and the Republicans who weren't doing their jobs. But there was of course a rightwing "expert" that also testified at the Hearing. But the Carnegie person testifying looked him straight in the eye and said your sources were not in the loop, not high enough up the ladder to know what really happened. So this is the type of thing that happens with layers of deceptions and brainwashing, many don't realize they're being lied to, and yet many do know and go along, whereas the ones with experience and integrity have left. Government workers from every department, across the political spectrum have become whistleblowers on this Admin, they saw the manipulations going on and they didn't go along so they were fired or resigned. So these Impeachment Hearings may not be a cakewalk, the Bush Admin has brainwashed many people, even though the facade is crumbling. People have to be pretty hard in denial to hold up the Bush Admin armor of lies. But some of the big myths/deceptions are more difficult to see through unless you've seen the raw documents in front of you. So even some liberal Congresspeople who haven't done their homework have been brainwashed on certain issues. This is the first time in history that We The People have access to the truth before Congress, so We have to teach them, and We have to hold onto the evidence, because no one else is. Just imagine what the history books will say if we don't succeed in revealing all the intentional deceptions, myths, lies. In fact many including some liberal leaders have bought the myth of a "global network of terrorism" that all the inside experts says doesn't exist, like the British BBC Documentary "Power of Nightmares" and many of the inside whistleblowers and investigative journalists say is all a hoax,an intentional fabrication by the neoconservatives, to create fear in society, because they have another agenda. Not that there aren't some terrorists, but most of those are only focused on their own country and they were financed by Bush's Daddy friends in Saudi Arabia, and even mainstream history says they worked for the neocons in the war in Afghanistan in the 1980's. Well have a peaceful day tomorrow and help keep the faith alive.
