Women, Violence and Danger

By Barkha Dhar, published on Jun 24, 2011

A recent news item in the Reuters (factbox: The world's most dangerous countries for women), is a tumultuous testimony of the onslaught against women that still exists in many parts of the world. It is a lamenting yet noteworthy issue that despite a sociopolitical voyage for gender equality, women’s rueful plight remains a dreary discussion. Some of the countries that rank the highest in this predicament are Afghanistan, Congo, Pakistan, India, and Somalia. The brutality against women in these countries includes illiteracy and economic discrimination, forced marriages including child marriages,... (more)

Nobody's Body but Hers

... Walk. This began in Toronto, Canada, and has spread globally. The other calls itself, Personhood USA and its “primary mission is to serve Jesus by advocating for pre-born children.

The inspiration for Slut Walk is a remark by a Toronto police officer to a personal security class that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” The initial protest response formed around the premise that regardless of what they wear no women are asking for rape. The attitude expressed in the police officer’s remark is depressingly common although less frequently... (more)

Looking Beyond Physicality-International Women’s Day 2011

By Barkha Dhar, published on Mar 8, 2011

Women, for long have been a buffoon puppet of the media and entertainment. As a gratifying toy, women have mainly been recognized as an object of seeking pleasure by pulling their psychological and physiological strings. Women, more often have been recognized for their physicality and least for their inner beauty. The media portrayal of women today is nothing less than an active and passive eroticization that often leads to a desire for voluptuous figures and augmentations in young girls, an accession sadly not of their intellectual and emotional self, but more often of their physical self.... (more)

By Frank - icare2be, published on Nov 17, 2010

Dear Lord, I pray for Wisdom to understand my man,Love to forgive him,Patience for his moods;Because Lord, if I pray for StrengthI'll beat him to death.

If not patience Lord A cheap, but successful barrister Specializing in spousal abuse And an understanding judge and jury.

If not wisdom Lord Let my mind be gone For since he is responsible To take care financially, If not personally.

Ahhh! Thank you Lord!I cannot express my heart-felt feelings. You delivered a solution unthought of. May the heat below provide his reward.

What if the whole moment would be true?

What if he is the strong voice that breaks her minds perimeter?

What if she doesn't want to keep yes and no chained, because she has a clean and pure conscience?

What if she had forgotten her complete form till the suburbs,at least for a moment?

What if he wud be there , to drag everything out of her , to outline her better?

What if she would remain disconnected of mind , leaving it permanently as a past witness.

What if he has sneaked like a hearth-thief , because she can't harm her?

Say No To Dowry

By Barkha Dhar, published on Sep 3, 2010

Marriage is an entity of benign omens and configurations made in the heaven, performed on the earth. It’s a gracious threshold to unification of two souls and of two families. Also known as “Kanya daan” in Hindu wedding, it’s the father of the bride that offers his daughter for marriage on a promise that the groom shall perform his duties as a husband according to the vedic(religious) hymns recited during the ceremony.... (more)

By MUGISHO N.THEOPHILE, published on May 25, 2010

Having a look throughout the Great Lakes Region of Africa, GLR, ie Burundi, the Congo and Rwanda, we find that women are not well represented in the professional area, government and leadership positions except in Rwanda. Rwanda is the first country in the world that employs more women than men in the public sector. Precisely in the government they represent 52%, except in the army. In this field, they are also more represented compared to Burundi and the Congo. In these two countries, women are extremely less representative within the armed forces; they always lag behind their counterpart... (more)

By MUGISHO N.THEOPHILE, published on May 18, 2010

The eastern part of the Congo has been going through harsh moments of brutality and war these last fifteen years. This is caused by the lack of strong laws that can appropriately deal with security. These wars have caused a lot of victims in the human and material sense. Women and men have been killed like flies and no one is punished. Women have also been used as sex objects.
