How to Deal with the Homeless

By travelingseth, published on Oct 6, 2007

Living in San Francisco, homelessness is not just a problem you read about. Every day on my way to work I come face to face with dozens of people living on the street who ask me for help. It's made me think a lot about the way society treats the homeless and what I should do when I'm approached for money. I've been doing some research and have come up with a few simple strategies I thought I'd share. Human Shield: If you're lucky enough to be walking close to someone, position yourself so that they're in-between you and the bum. It's now their problem to deal with. Once in position,... (more)

Techie Geek Turns Indie Artist

By hyper3, published on Sep 25, 2007

...By night, Hisert was a keyboardist in a popular local 80s band, and he inspired Van Spall to stop being afraid of her dreams and get working on her first album. Joined by violin/violist Eric Golub and bassist Derek Yergler, the two began performing together at Bay Area hotspots like San Francisco’s Blondie’s Bar & No Grill and Ireland 32 and The Bistro in Hayward. The compelling result of their eventual songwriting collaboration is Van Spall’s stylistically diverse debut Cotton-Poly Blend, whose 12 tracks draw from her love for rock, blues, gospel and pop, as... (more)

Bonds Will Be A Giant No More

By Ed Attanasio, published on Sep 22, 2007

Barry Bonds will not be a San Francisco Giant next year. Who he’ll be playing for is unknown, but one thing is certain – the man has worn out his welcome in the City by the Bay. After breaking Hank Aaron’s career home run record and having a mediocre season this year by Bonds’ standards, Barry will be looking for a job. It’s been a long run for him in San Francisco, the team he’ll always be associated with after his career is long over. A lot of fans are saying that Giants Owner Peter Magowan is abandoning Bonds after his team benefited from all the fame, press and added attendance... (more)

SF Art Speaks: An Interview with Ken Keegan

By KathrynV, published on Sep 10, 2007

Ken Keegan is a San Francisco artist originally from New York. His use of color draws in your attention and creates a kind of flow to his artwork that makes it seem almost as if it is in motion. This effect is enhanced when you view his work in his virtual art gallery which is one of the best website set-ups for an artist that I’ve ever seen. In this interview, Ken tells us about his work and his experiences so far in San Francisco. What can you tell us about the basics of your artwork? About your subjects and about your use of color? The basics of my artwork, huh? I want to create something... (more)

...use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate through the streets of our city. Pick your starting point and off you go! The Street View service was launched on May 25th of this year by Google as an added feature to their Google Maps website. At first only available in New York City, San Francisco, Miami, Denver and Las Vegas, Street View is now available in a few more cities. Valet? Or Not To Valet?

By 'Mean' Mike Duffau, published on Sep 9, 2007

The history of valet is very little. Valet parking service probably first appeared in America in the 1930's. It was offered in urban areas where parking was scarce such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Yet nowhere did valet parking flourish as well as it did in Los Angeles. Curb-side service quickly became the norm in the city of automobiles. Pictures of Hollywood elite tossing their keys to the friendly valet became an instant 'symbol of status' across the country. It paints a pretty picture doesn't it? It really does. But that's not the reality of valet parking nowadays. Let's dissect... (more)
