By Shaun Gibson, published on Mar 20, 2014

The troops will be part of a group of about 1,300 troops, mostly American, who are taking part in Rapid Trident, a previously planned exercise. US officers cancelled a military exercise in Russia in the light of current events but confirmed the exercise in Ukraine would go ahead. British officials said they had yet to decide the UK’s level of participation in Ukraine but confirmed planning for Rapid Trident 2014 in Lviv, near the Polish border, was ongoing. The US has already sent 12 warplanes and 300 personnel to Poland in the wake of Russia’s takeover of Crimea. On Tuesday, vice president... (more)

By Shaun Gibson, published on Mar 6, 2014

“In Britain’s interests” he says..How about the Ukrainians Mr Eton Boy?

Barack Obama has ordered a freezing of US assets and visa restrictions on those involved in Russia’s military intervention in Crimea, as Britain’s David Cameron warned President Vladimir Putin “it cannot be business as usual”. Mr Obama signed an executive order aimed at punishing Russians and Ukrainians responsible for “threatening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”. The visa ban does not apply to the Russian President, a US official said. The White House’s rebuke came as the European Union... (more)

Kerry, speaking alongside his Qatari counterpart, said US considers going back to UN Security Council on Syria [AFP]

US Secretary of State John Kerry has met members of the Arab League in Paris to discuss the crisis in Syria and possible US-led military action against the country.

After more than two years of civil war, the US is trying to drum up support for limited strikes on Syria in response to an apparent chemical weapons attack that Washington blames on the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

However, in a joint... (more)

Probes from Khan al-Assal show chemicals used in the March 19 attack did not belong to standard Syrian army ammunition, and that the shell carrying the substance was similar to those made by a rebel fighter group, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.

Russia, a Slave for a Thousand Years

By Anastasia , published on Aug 19, 2012

There is something rotten in the state of Russia. It gets more rotten by the day. There is something rotten in the state of Russia and its name is Vladimir Putin. Putrid Putin, I was tempted to write, and I just have! A former KGB operative, he is now the shady president of a country descending into the worst forms of political gangsterism. Actually, it's just descending into gangsterism, period.

So, what brought this on? It was my first angry reaction when I read on Friday about the vindictive jail sentences passed against three members of Pussy Riot, a female punk band that mounted... (more)

Putin Persecutes Pussy

By Anastasia , published on Aug 12, 2012

Vladimir Putin, Russia’s authoritarian president, does not like Pussy. In fact he dislikes Pussy so much that she’s in prison on a charge of hooliganism, held for months on remand and, if convicted, facing a seven year jail sentence. What has poor Pussy done? Why, just this: she meowed her disapproval of the big dog in the Kremlin.

The Pussy in question is actually three members of Pussy Riot, a Russian feminist punk rock band. Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Ekaterina Samutsevich, all in their twenties, have been in custody since March, arrested for their part in protests... (more)

Judgement Day Comes Early

By Anastasia , published on Aug 9, 2012

... even after the predicted date came and went.

I could not help but think of this when I read reports today that seventy members of an Islamist sect were found living in an underground bunker by police near the city of Kazan in the republic of Tartarsan, the biggest Muslim majority area in Russia, some five hundred miles east of Moscow

The group known as the Fayzarahmanist sect after Fayzrahman Satarov, their 83-year-old self-styled ‘emissary of Allah’, included some twenty-seven children between the ages of one and seventeen. Many of them were born underground and have... (more)

Putin’s Potemkin Democracy

By Anastasia , published on Nov 6, 2011

A Potemkin village, if you’ve never heard of the expression, is one of the enduring myths of Russian history. The reference is to fake settlements, hollow façades supposedly set up on the orders of Prince Grigory Potemkin, chief minister of Catherine the Great, to impress the Empress when she toured the Crimea in the late 1780s, territory recently conquered from the Ottoman Turks. It was simply a way of increasing his political prestige.

I say it’s a myth but in Russia myths have a habit of fleshing out into a reality, which really is nothing more than a myth! In the 1930s various western... (more)
