Fake Science

By ranfuchs, published on Apr 17, 2010

Science and scientific – are there better words to win an argument and prove how right you are? After all, if something is scientific or based on science it must be true, or so the common wisdom goes. And yet, few words have been more misused and abused – sometimes out of ignorance, but too often intentionally, in a manipulative way. So what does scientific really mean? And how can we, the non experts, know if something is scientific or merely presented as such?

Let’s for instance, look at an ad for a shampoo claiming that it contains a certain chemical that was scientifically proven... (more)

Doomsayers Gone Wild

By Lady D, published on Jan 20, 2010

It is already starting, we have had two large quakes in the past week and the doomsayers are at it. Apocalypse frenzy is being spread. Well of course there is going to be something with all the negative energy we have been putting out. Or maybe earth is really an Etch-A- Sketch, and it just wants to make a new picture.

Whatever the scenario, we are in it as long as we are, and yes we will all die, at some point. It is our job, get born, make a life story and die. Been this way since the beginning (whenever that was) of time.

Time now there is a strange concept. And no I can’t... (more)

Daily Word for this Sunday

By Pastor Jeff, published on Jan 9, 2010

"For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself." Phil 3:20-21I've said it before and I'll say it again. We cling far too hard to this life. We all claim to want to go to heaven -- but not today! We become ill with a possibly terminal disease -- and we fight it with all our resources. We want to stay alive. Why?There is the need of family and responsibilities. We want... (more)

Unlikely Salvation

By Selina Jane, published on Jan 6, 2010

I was going through a spiraling depression... The lows were lower than low, deep down in the depths of darkness. I couldn't get it together. I couldn't figure out how to feel anything other than hopeless.

I scrapped seven paintings, stared at my cursor when I tried to write, and struggled to even talk or answer the phone. Getting dressed, showered, and outside was another challenge. Nothing mattered. I figured it was time to call my shrink, but I worried about my ability to get in the car and drive myself there. The act of actually “getting there” seemed so overwhelming to me, as did... (more)

Forbidden Love

By taking off the mask, published on Dec 28, 2009

...wanted our bodies to combine

but faith wouldn't have it

or maybe it was my morals

but today it all changed

because our hidden dreams we did say

we want to be together

have the relationship that was forbidden

but than we remembered the other reason

and religion came up in the discussion

neither of us were willing to budge

we both loved our gods way to much

he is a Christian

I am a Jew

so there isn't much we can do

we won't bend

so we can never be anything more than just friends

Half Father, Half Soldier

By Lumiere, published on Oct 7, 2009

... fire at the enemy when given the opportunity. The concept of being a conscientious objector was acknowledged in 1775 by the Continental Congress. When the U.S. had a military draft, conscientious objectors often cited religious beliefs. Quakers, for whom pacifism is a fundamental part of their religion, notably objected to combat when drafted, but would serve in other parts of the military to fulfill their obligation. Since the U.S. no longer has a draft, why would a pacifist volunteer to flight? The answer is, they wouldn't. But some soldiers have a "crystallization of conscience," which is ... (more)

Faith Isn't Stupid

By Peter Schwartz, published on Sep 5, 2009

I've been noticing with greater and greater alarm that atheism is getting more and more popular in literary and academic circles.  In fact, the majority of writers and scholars believe that anyone who believes in God must be naive and stupid.  You aren't smart enough, aren't sophisticated enough to realize that God doesn't exist and that life is pretty much shit.  As the old saying goes, misery loves company.  Now I don't claim to be some highfalutin intellectual (fingers corn cob pipe thoughtfully for effect) but my great grand-daddy left me with at least this much sense: anything that makes... (more)
