Planet Inspired: Solar power, time to send in the robots

By PlanetInspired, published on Oct 18, 2012

...are developing robots which, guided by GPS, may also be capable of installing the frames for the panels. The idea is to eliminate the need for the solar panels to be screwed in, that would instead be glued to the frame, even allowing robots to make the electrical connections. This type of robot could be useful for bringing electricity to areas with difficult weather or environmental conditions. One example is Japan, which has commissioned a prototype of this robot for installing solar power systems in the contaminated areas near the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Planet Inspired: help, the north pole is disappearing!

By PlanetInspired, published on Oct 16, 2012 the uninhabited area that surrounds the North Pole and a ban on oil drilling and non-sustainable fishing in the rest of the Arctic. Since June 2012, more than 1,700,000 people have signed the petition to defend the Arctic, launched by the environmentalist association that is organizing a mission for the start of 2013, during which time it intends to place an Arctic capsule on the bottom of the ocean that will contain all the names of the defenders of this resource of humankind, the Arctic, that truly runs the risk of disappearing, rapidly, forever.

Santa Rita Jails’s smart grid: no black outs, we are eco!

By PlanetInspired, published on Oct 10, 2012

... has worked to optimize each power source. If there is a peak in demand, the grid sells the excess energy generated by the jail to the power company, and it does so in total autonomy. At certain times, it can temporarily lower the air-conditioning or lighting in the prison to generate excess energy to be sold to the power company grid.

“During our history we have always tried to use state-of-the-art technology," said Alameda County Sheriff Gregory J. Ahern in an interview. “The smart grid and the new solar power system continues in that tradition".

... will also provide training to trainees coming from developing countries and technical assistance to every country to address their ocean-related concerns, and lead to the development of common regional projects for the sea.

The project’s first priority is protecting the marine ecological system, reducing pollution that contaminates the oceans and the development of high-level marine technology. The Korea International Cooperation Agency (Koica), a government agency that administrates South Korean international aid programs, will fund these projects.

Planet Inspired: Frecciarossa 1000 the record-breaking train

By PlanetInspired, published on Sep 21, 2012

...Stato's new high-speed train will enter into service within a couple of years, reducing travel time between Rome and Milan even further, getting closer to two hours than the current three, at least for trains without intermediate stops.Unlike the current Frecciarossa (ETR 500), which is equipped with engines only at the front and rear, the new train will be equipped with 16 engines along the entire train, that will be 202 meters long. This solution will make the train more stable and allow it to travel at higher speeds, also thanks to other adjustments.

Planet Inspired: Coral reefs at risk, robots repair them

By PlanetInspired, published on Sep 18, 2012

... the swarm share the same knowledge; therefore, if one is damaged, another can take its place. The first mission where the coralbots will see action will most likely be off the Scottish coast. In these deep waters, the threat to coral reefs is mainly from bottom fishing. Therefore, it is an ideal place to test this new technology that could help prevent the disappearance of corals from the sea: but this also depends on the urgent creation of stricter regulations, invoked by the scientific community, that limit the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems.

Pearl of Qatar is looking out for the environment

By PlanetInspired, published on Sep 17, 2012

Air conditioning on the island is based on an efficient district cooling system, copied from that invented by the ancient Romans for heating their buildings: water is chilled in a central cooling station and then run through the piping system, with less waste and less danger of leakage of refrigerant gases.

When the project is completed, Qatar will boast 13 new islands and 32 kilometers of additional coastline, but of course the future depends on the current economic crisis that has slowed the construction of new residential complexes.

Planet Inspired: Sustainability arrives on Campus

By PlanetInspired, published on Sep 4, 2012

For more than a year, the Università degli Studi of Milan and the Politecnico of Milan have been cooperating on an ambitious project: the creation of a common sustainable campus.

Through residents, renewable energy, and the environment, Milan is working to build a sustainable campus. At the Politecnico, they have installed dumpsters that measure the weight and volume of the material that is placed in the dumpsters, and send the data online via GPRS for the monitoring and management of waste collection. The idea is also being experimented with in Beijing.

But even Italian universities... (more)
