NFL Primer: Exactly what does the NFL commissioner DO?

By SanityCheck2, published on Nov 10, 2010

Roger Goodell the son of a U.S. Senator and from a prominent, politically connected family that obviously had a few markers to call in is the current commissioner of the National Football League. This means that just about every distasteful thing involving the NFL starts with “Today the NFL announced” and ends with “by Commissioner Roger Goodell”. So except for being the barer of bad news, getting really good seats at NFL Games and being interviewed by the “B” team at ESPN (Suzy Kolber is so underutilized), what exactly does the commissioner actually do?

Evidently, about 1925, the owners... (more)

Whiners Aren't Winners

By Deborah Horton, published on Nov 9, 2010

If you recall, I said when TO and Ochocinco ended up on the same team that it would be about 6 games before it started to unravel. I was off a few games, but I was right. Only, I had it backwards. It's Ochocinco that's the problem, not TO.

In Monday night's game between the Bengals and Steelers, the Steelers had the game won, like so many games this weekend, but then they let the Bengals back in it. TO had the bulk of the Bengals receptions with 10 catches for 141 yards and 2 TDs. Ochocinco had 1 catch for 15 yards. As the Bengals were trying to come back, Ochocinco was all up in... (more)

NFL Picks Week 9

By Deborah Horton, published on Nov 6, 2010

Here we go - the weekly installment of NFL embarrassment. However, I think I'm getting better. Last week, I missed only 3 picks. Let's hope this week I do the same or even better - that would be surprising!

NYJ @ DET - Even though the Lions won last week with the return of Stafford, they won't win this week. They will however make a game of it as they are much better than their record indicates. Jets win.

MIA @ BAL - Huge defensive showdown between these two teams. It could come down to the last play of the game. I think the Ravens win, but the Dolphins have just as much... (more)

Here We Go Again

By Deborah Horton, published on Nov 4, 2010

So, the only team to claim Randy Moss was the Tennessee Titans. Once again, everyone is SO excited. The very same words being uttered. Randy opens up the field. Randy draws defenders. Randy can really help our team. Heard that before recently?

The only real difference between the Titans and Vikings picking up Randy Moss, besides the fact the Titans didn't have to give up anything or pay any money, is that the Titans coach isn't a guy who has let his team and QB run the show and run over him. Jeff Fisher is about as far from Brad Childress as a coach as Kobe Bryant is from just... (more)

NFL Games To Watch Week 9

By Deborah Horton, published on Nov 3, 2010

Two matchups this weekend that are going to be excellent – or at least they look like they will on paper. One is for dominance of both the NFC South and possibly the entire NFC and the other is a smash mouth fight for the AFC West.

In the NFC South, the Falcons are currently on top of the standings just above the Buccaneers by virtue of standings in the division with the Falcons at 1-0 and the Bucs at 1-1. The Bucs have been making a lot of noise about how they are the best team in the entire NFC, while the Falcons have just been going about their business….more under the radar. The... (more)

Purple Haze

By Deborah Horton, published on Nov 3, 2010

Look, I seriously have ZERO idea what is going on with the Vikings. It's almost as if they have a compulsive need to be in the headlines. It's like the entire organization is peopled by narcissists. This team is 2-5 and ALL they ever do is create some sort of drama for themselves instead of trying to work to fix their problems with winning. I just do not get it.

Yesterday, allegedly, apparently, the Vikings let Randy Moss go. However, Brad Childress apparently did this without talking to Vikings front office management. The Vikings didn't have Moss on the waiver wire by the deadline... (more)

Re-Committing to Excellence

By Jeff Weisinger, published on Nov 1, 2010

...go wrong from JaMarcus Russell?)

Campbell has thrown for 514 yards with four touchdowns with no interceptions in the Raiders last two wins, leading a Raiders team that has racked a combined total of 1053 net yards in the last two games, and a Raiders offense that is ranked eighth in the NFL.

And then there's the defense.

For the first time in years, the Raiders drafted, well... smart.

Top-draft pick Rolando McClain has already recorded 40 tackles, 25 solo and looks to be a force in the Raiders front seven in the years to come. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha went... (more)

What If Kitna Wins?

By Deborah Horton, published on Nov 1, 2010

Let's say Kitna leads the Cowboys to a win against the Jags today. Let's say he does it in convincing fashion. Let's say he gets the most out of a very talented Cowboys team who has yet to show what they really have under Romo. What if Kitna wins? What then?

For the longest time, I've thought that the Cowboys issues were multiple and internal. That there were several players who didn't want to play with each other. That there were several players who didn't like each other. I was never a believer that the Cowboys problems were the coach. I thought they were between the players,... (more)

Where We Stand - Week 8

By Deborah Horton, published on Nov 1, 2010

The NFL standings after week 8 haven’t changed that much, but there is some movement to be noted. Some teams seem to be clicking on all cylinders and some just keep misfiring.

AFC East Team

New England Patriots 6 1

New York Jets 5 2

Miami Dolphins 4 3

Buffalo Bills 0 7

The Patriots have taken over the top of the division. Look familiar? Well most people are still discounting them. The talking heads say the Pats are weak on defense, make mistakes, don’t know what kind of team they are, blah, blah, blah. Who’s winning?... (more)

NFL Week 8 Picks

By Deborah Horton, published on Oct 31, 2010

I'm getting used to the embarrassment now - so it's not bothering me so much to make my obviously ridiculous picks :) Maybe this week, I should just pick against my head and go with heart - that might work out better. I doubt it though and it's Halloween on Sunday - sounds like the perfect recipe for some freaked out games. Here we go!

DEN @ SF - The Broncos continue their mediocre to plain awful play, but somehow the 49ers are worse. Broncos win.

JAC @ DAL - Kitna....gets the win. Could it be that Romo is the problem for the Boys? You be the judge.

MIA @ CIN - A hard... (more)
