Pillsbury Soldier: A Conversation with Nicholas Gurewitch

By Hassassin, published on Jan 4, 2007 of the Perry Bible Fellowship webcomic: an interview with creator Nicholas Gurewitch. An aesthetic chameleon and subtle comedian, Gurewitch has been able to balance the profane with the profound, the clever with the silly—and all in four frames or less. The 24 year old New York native started PBF comics while attending film school, a background that may account for his keen ability to create a sense of timing on the flat page. Now if you think this is going to turn into a hackneyed version of “Inside the Actor’s Studio”, I promise you that I... (more)

By V, published on Dec 20, 2006

...popular, American term for the Dutch, ‘Sinterklaas’ which is a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas). ‘Santa Claus’ is actually a mispronunciation of the Dutch word ‘Sinterklaas’ by the English settlers of New Amsterdam - later renamed ‘New York.’ Sinterklaas was and is a major, annual celebration in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. It falls on the eve of St Nicholas’ Day, December 6th, which is the day for gift-giving and the climax of many days’ festivities. Saint Nicholas is the beloved, true-to-life... (more)

Paris Hilton Cocaine Rumour

By Matt Hilton, published on Dec 17, 2006

Recently, The New York Post, printed a photo of Paris Hilton saying that there was a suspicious white powder in one nostril. When Paris's Rep, Elliot Mintz , was asked to comment, he had this to say. "They asked me if Paris was using cocaine. I explained that she does not use narcotics. They asked what the substance could have been. I explained that I was not there ... so I offered some possible explanations." If you ask me, I would say that Miss Hilton has a glare in her nose, not cocaine. (more)

Coup de Grace for Foie Gras Geese

By V, published on Dec 13, 2006

...of Foie Gras is illegal in some countries and states of the USA. Despite France being the world’s largest producer and consumer of Foie Gras, producing 18,450 tons of the 23,500 tons produced worldwide in 2005, two companies in America do produce Foie Gras. Hudson Valley Foie Gras in New York and Sonoma Foie Gras in California contribute to the domestic (and some international) consumption of this light and buttery, luxury product. In order to produce the varying quality ranges of Foie Gras from the absurdly expensive to just expensive, the ducks and geese raised must be force... (more)

Yeah, It's Still Hard Being Me

By Charles Harmison, published on Dec 5, 2006

... as a large amount of marijuana. He was also charged with having an illegal secret compartment in his vehicle. This comes nearly one month after a warrant was issued for him on charges from a pending trial for a previous arrest on September 27, for attempting to bring a baton onto a plane in New York. He was charged with a felony for the baton, which might normally be considered a misdemeanor, due to his "background and criminal record" as stated by an Orange County D.A.'s Office spokeswoman in early November. All in all it has been a rough couple of months for the prolific rapper,... (more)

“Tomorrow is election day…”

By D. E. Carson, published on Nov 7, 2006

...the people actually take the time to read things for themselves and not just what the liberal main-scream media wants them to read. I have read all of the facts concerning every major issue at stake in this election and I’m here to tell you that most of what I read every day in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and even The Washington Post is only half of the story. It happens to be the liberal side, but it is one side of the story. Frankly, I am tired of the kvetching that goes on day in and day out about the war on terror. The war in Iraq and the war on terror are... (more)

Real Estate in Los Angeles - crash or soft landing?

By Dan Maier, published on Nov 6, 2006

...4 times your gross annual income or no more than 25% of your gross monthly income on a mortgage payment. This rule may gain some sway depending on your geographic location. For instance you may have to spend 5 – 6 times your income in popular cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York where, coincidentally, some people are currently paying up to 90% of their monthly income on a mortgage payment with the rationale that the increase they are paying for their mortgage will be offset by the increase in equity they will receive via the current aggressive appreciation provided by ... (more)

Boyskout's "School of Etiquette"

By Caitlin McGuire, published on Nov 4, 2006

...of the closers: “Vitamin C.” The song is guitar driven; guided by Dahl and Lewine, while Satterfield’s sexually-charged, reluctant and snarling mumbles take second stage. I want to say that BoySkout is the San Francisco equivalent of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But they live in New York now. And we all know that between YYY, Boyskout, and Le Tigre, their isn’t enough room for three different androgynous female-fronted bands in the same city. So maybe BoySkout isn’t entirely original. But can you imagine how great the show would be if the bands came together for... (more)

A love Letter to the City of Los Angeles

By Natasha VC, published on Oct 25, 2006

...and constant congestion. They rank vapid duck-lipped blondes as your main ambassadors to the world. They say you have no culture. No class. That all you are is a perpetual pump of glitter, superficiality, and sleaze. The dream dump. They don’t understand you. I do. No one smirks when New Yorkers profess their undying love of their island metropolis. Chicago is considered the Mid-West’s cultural epicenter and has the entire country’s respect. Bostonians can paint their faces blue and bellow about home town pride without shame. But saying you love Los Angeles is like... (more)
