...angry and resentful for the first time in 8 years. And we made that guy our president!
However, things have taken a sharp turn into very dark territory since the halcyon days of that election. Bad news abounds in every media outlet, ready to rain on your parade in a myriad of ways. Inspiration is running low. Democratic and Republican pundits seem obsessed with the failures of the US system and miss no opportunity to remind us of the guilty parties – whoever they happen to feel is responsible. I don’t really know who killed the American Dream, and I don’t care. The old... (more)
Front fork extended and raked beyond the standard, the chopper cruises loudly past as all heads turn to marvel at the audacity of America's modern day cowboy. Old ladies frown, mothers gather their children, and fathers nervously keep watch out of the corners of their eyes.
Gliding towards the corner store, wind whipped hair backwards flowing, the machine comes to a full throated stop. The put-putting of the idle lets you know from afar that you're not dealing with any ordinary weekend warrior. This is the real deal. One who has chosen 'the life', the road his only home, and late, lonely... (more)
Medicine and other sciences have advanced immensely since Antiquity. Unfortunately, many of their fundamental principles have barely spread beyond the circle of professionals and specialists. Even in the 21st century, important segments of the population still know less about their own health than about sports or entertainment celebrities.Hippocrates (460-370 BC), the most famous physician of Ancient Greece, already identified basic rules for protecting our health. However, although many generations have passed, his major discovery, the idea that sickness rarely happens by chance, is still... (more)
"For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself." Phil 3:20-21I've said it before and I'll say it again. We cling far too hard to this life. We all claim to want to go to heaven -- but not today! We become ill with a possibly terminal disease -- and we fight it with all our resources. We want to stay alive. Why?There is the need of family and responsibilities. We want... (more)
So what muse am I talking about? I'm talking about that goddess called inspiration, imagination and creativity, whose absence leaves many a talented writer gnashing his teeth and rending his garments. Does this mean I've learned to 'seduce the muse' or merely that I've learned techniques to stimulate my creativity?
The answer is, both, because in the end run they mean exactly the same. Inspiration comes from the unconscious workings of the mind which we, by definition,... (more)
Recently, I had the privilege of spending time at Grand Harbor Marina at Pickwick Landing on my brother’s sailboat. Let me tell you, it was way too restful. There is nothing like sitting under a red-faced moon, with a sprinkling of stars overhead and a mild early summer wind a’blowin’ to inspire you to write like nobody’s business.
Funny thing is, I could write on my troublesome WIP, or another story, even one that I just dreamed up as I walked the piers at the marina looking at beautiful watercraft- but, what did I do? I wrote on this article instead. The purpose of said article?... (more)
