Violent arrest in Hollywood caught on tape

By Ariel, published on Nov 10, 2006

The video of a violent arrest by the LAPD showed up on YouTube a couple of days ago and is not exactly great publicity for our city's police. On August 11, 2006, two Hollywood Police Officers were taped arresting William Cardenas, 23, a local gang member, who was wanted on a felony warrant for receiving stolen property. Cardenas reportedly run from them when Officers Patrick Farrell and Alexander Schlegel recognized him while on patrol. They were eventually able to knock him to the ground near Gordon Street and Fountain Avenue, and he was arrested after a short struggle. According to the arrest... (more)

By Ariel, published on Nov 9, 2006

... they will get the console. It is indeed very likely that most stores won't carry enough playstations to meet the demand in the first days. EB Games reported that they were done taking pre-orders and that you would have to wait until 2007 to get yours if you haven't pre-ordered it. The West Hollywood Best Buy will have a launch party 3 hours before the official release. Romaine St will be closed to traffic between La Brea and Formosa during that time. Events will also be held by Circuit City in Los Angeles as well as other major U.S cities and they will even give away some free PS3s.... (more)

On a day that will see major shakeups in the United States Government, a long awaited impeachment has already begun to take place in Hollywood: Britney Spears has filed for divorce from Kevin Federline. Spears cited irreconcilable differences, which could be as simple as being forced to listen to K-Fed’s debut album. According to TMZ.com, Spears filed the divorce papers today at Los Angeles County Superior Court, and has asked for both legal and physical custody of the couple's two children, one-year old Sean Preston and two-month old Jayden James. New Kid On the Block: Is BrooWaha The Answer to LA's Newspaper Woes?

By Ariel, published on Nov 5, 2006

This article was published this Friday in FishBowl L.A., a blog about the Hollywood creative community and L.A. media. Circulation is down at the LAT. The OC Register and the San Diego Union-Tribune are both offering buyouts. The Weekly is in it deep (Jill Stewart is a big news, but has anyone caught on to the fact that they've laid off all the fact checkers?). What's an LA Newsie to do? Take the news into you own hands, brother. BrooWaha, an interactive online "citizen newspaper," was recently started up in LA by Israeli/Parisian Ariel Vardi who wanted to "create an unbiased, reliable... (more)

What to Do in Los Angeles

By Katy Chen, published on Nov 2, 2006

...Firecracker at Grand Star in Chinatown. Saturday, I'd love to start the day off with a luxurious massage at any spa. There are so many amazing spas in Los Angeles. Kinara is one of my favorites, and I love having a super healthy, but yummy lunch on the patio afterwards. Since I'm in West Hollywood, I might as well do some shopping along Robertson, and after shopping, I'd have an early dinner at the Ivy...to avoid the paparazzi since I'm oh so famous (yeah right). At night, I'll go to Sunset and hear a friend's band, or go to Hollywood and either have drinks at the Dresden, the Good... (more)

Bring out the Dead!

By Alethea, published on Nov 1, 2006

...costumes, and even food. Even though Mexico may be a bit out of the itinerary if an Angeleno wanted to celebrate such a holiday, there are alternatives that one can attend. Olvera Street in Los Angeles has a Day of the Dead celebration every year on the 1st and the 2nd of November. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery also has a huge celebration yearly. Although those may not be viable options due to time constraints, Canoga Park also has a celebration this Sunday, November 5th. It’s located at Sherman Way and Canoga and will last from 10am to 5pm. There will be food, raffles,... (more)

It's Time for a (Sexual) Revolution

By ZenGrrrl, published on Nov 1, 2006

...a schizophrenia: "This is sexiness, but you’ll never achieve it—it's only a fantasy." "This is what sex is but only in fantasies, not in the real world." "This is how you talk about sex: by not talking about it." From the tenets of organized religion to the liposuction aura of Hollywood, we are bombarded with sex messages but given no mentorship. We have no support systems that address the singular act that has brought every human being—six billion of us—into existence. It is the very act that drives the continuance of our species. We live in an age when AIDS... (more)

By Stephanie Michele, published on Oct 31, 2006

...Loss.” It has been reported the couple was spotted making out in a sushi restaurant and she was spotted many times leaving his loft apartment. Abbie’s rep denies the affair and both Reese and Ryan’s people have no comment regarding the rumor. Was it the curse of Hollywood? Living your life in the public eye has never been easy for relationships especially when one person in the relationship is enjoying more success than the other. Just days after Reese’s big Oscar win in March, tabloids were reporting their marriage was in crisis. Ironically, five out... (more)

MADNESS!

By Barbara Kowal, published on Oct 28, 2006

...tomorrow? No one knows. But as the old adage goes, “There is nothing so certain as death and taxes.” This is madness. A new kind of madness that has permeated the atmosphere like a mist and seems to have taken on biblical proportions. The greatest purveyor of this new madness is Hollywood. Hollywood has, at its disposal, a tremendous impact on world affairs, be it social or political. Notwithstanding entertainment for entertainment’s sake, there are innovative ways Hollywood can bring people an awareness of their spiritual self in new ways without being overly didactic... (more)
