Irreconcilable Differences

By Tyler Langness, published on Jun 26, 2007

...a fall from grace. They had just lost the NBA championship to the Detroit Pistons in five games, and the organization was at a crossroads. The rift between Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal had widened beyond repair, and even hardened veterans Gary Payton and Karl Malone had grown weary of the Hollywood drama. Changes were imminent for the NBA's marquee team, and it's up-and-coming superstar, Kobe Bryant, wanted to see what direction they were heading. So, he sat down for an exit interview with front office representatives, who told him they were going to build a contender around him, and... (more)

LA's NFL Team: The Houston Texans

By J. Lyon Miller, published on Jun 26, 2007

...wasn’t it? Ovitz, flush with $90 million in cash from Michael Eisner’s personal wall safe in Burbank, was going to build a Spanish-mission looking ballpark (pejoratively named “Taco Bell Stadium” by critics), surrounded by a shopping mall. What could go wrong? Big Hollywood players were involved, the stadium was going to look like Mexifornia, and it was in LA but outside the city limits, right on the OC’s doorstep. Everyone was turning cartwheels, right? Well, turns out that the Mall/Stadium shopping was going to be done at Bed, Bath and Borrowed Money.... (more)

Evan Beats Bruce

By D. E. Carson, published on Jun 25, 2007

... has fine tuned his sinister side somewhere along the way because he is very believable as the corrupt Congressman Long. The congressman is a far cry from the lovable Dan Conner, Goodman's role on TV's Rosanne. Sure there is the obligatory liberal "Save the earth" message in the movie -- what Hollywood feature doesn't stick that into the plot somewhere these days? But ignoring the in-your-face placement of the message, the movie also has another message that it would behoove liberals to heed -- you can change the world with acts of random kindness. I would like to think that God is like... (more)

The Sopranos cuts to black

By Liz, published on Jun 18, 2007

...proudly declares has the (abysmal) highway mileage of 23 miles per gallon. AJ is now a budding movie executive. He speeds off the high school to pick up his young girlfriend, in a display of boyish cockiness. It is something that would make Tony proud. Throughout the series, the show lines up Hollywood and film production as a parallel industry to the mob, especially highlighted by Christopher’s trip to Los Angeles. Nancy Drew Very Few But Worth The Time

By D. E. Carson, published on Jun 17, 2007

...the movie to be campy, but believe it or not, I was actually surprised. The movie follows Nancy and her father, Carson, played by Tate Donovan, to Los Angeles where Nancy stumbles onto a murder mystery surrounding the house they are renting for their stay. We see Nancy try to fit in at Hollywood High School but it becomes glaringly apparent that she is going to be picked on and ostracized from the beginning. Fortunately, we are not forced to endure more than two of Nancy's indignities and for the rest of the movie, we don't see HHS again. Where the plot was predictable was that we... (more)
