From It Girl To Drive-Thru Rehab

By KLiedle, published on Oct 18, 2007

After the demise of Hollywood's studio system, sweeping changes occurred throughout the entertainment industry. The studios no longer held the reins of their own empire. Hollywood was forced to deal with stars and movie-making much differently than they had in the past. Under the new system, sometimes referred to as "New Hollywood", there are still talent scouts, agents, publicists, and studio executives, but their roles... (more)

T-Mobile Pushes to Rezone Neighborhood

By Evan Como, published on Oct 13, 2007

...at the southeastern corner of the Kenneth Hahn Park. So, instead of locating its antennas nearby on one of the local businesses or atop a billboard, T-Mobile has set its sights on the Baldwin Hills Estates. Most motorists passing through the La Brea/Stocker interchange on the way towards Hollywood or to L.A.X. have no idea that there is a tidy Mid-century residential community tucked beyond the apartments and condos that are visible from La Brea. Homes in the area have recently sold for as much as $1.2 million. During the cellular phone company’s initial courtship of the... (more)

Hollywood's Studio System: The End Of An Era

By KLiedle, published on Oct 13, 2007

The Hollywood studio system's grand demise occurred during the time between the Great Depression and U.S. entry into World War II. In 1948, the U.S. Department of Justice sued the major studios for anti-competitive practices. In what is now called the Paramount Decision, the court ruled against the studios, and according to The Oxford History Of World Cinema, the court called for the immediate "divorce of production and exhibition and the elimination of unfair booking practices." In another hallmark decision, actress Olivia de Havilland, most known for her role in the feature film, Gone... (more)

By icanluvulongtime, published on Oct 10, 2007

...need stories so we've really got a win/win goin' on here as long as everyone plays by the rules which are simple enough like I said, even for, well, the models. Except that I'm throwing everyone in Beverly Hills a curve. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more except in Hollywood where they wouldn't get it anyway so the BH it is. I'm eating. I'm going to eat food and a lot of it. I am going to eat until I'm satisfied and then I'm eating some more. I am bustin out on a mission and I'm going to eat everything on my plate. Hey Buddy, We Don't Care Who You Know

By Geoffrey A. Citron, published on Oct 9, 2007

Living in Los Angeles one encounters quite the cast of characters where ever they turn: from the freaks in Hollywood, to the greasy-haired cell-phone peddlers of the Valley, to the latest Ohio-transplant looking to succeed where so many have failed in “the industry”. It’s all here. Our homeless can cop a SAG card by rolling around Venice on in-lines, vomit-covered bimbos can achieve fame while getting 86’ed from a dive, and people are made into Stars overnight with a cheap camera-phone… Just about anything can happen here in Los Angeles, because hey, we’ve got personality! But personality... (more)

A reel revitalization in Hollywood

By Josh Marks, published on Sep 29, 2007

Strike up the band and start playing “Hooray for Hollywood” because Tinseltown is making a comeback. For year tourists visited Hollywood searching for the glitz and glamour associated with the entertainment industry, only to be universally disappointed by the sad reality of the area. Replacing the major studios, classic movie palaces and thriving street life were prostitutes, seedy shops, neglected landmarks and general urban blight -- the Hollywood dream had turned into a nightmare. Today a walk along Hollywood’s major boulevards reveals more construction cranes than crack addicts. The... (more)

At Home, She Feels Like A Tourist

By thermos62000, published on Sep 28, 2007

...several small cities in one) to explore. But I feel like it's ideal for me because I have so many interests, there's always something--whether it's a place or thing-- that appeals to whatever mood I'm in. Here's what I've discovered about L.A. in the past six months: I like living in West Hollywood. It's centrally-located. It's diverse. Nobody gives a shit. Venice is cool because it's down-to-earth. Folks let their freak flags fly. I've only been to Silverlake once, but I liked Hyperion Tavern immediately. Hey, anyplace that plays T. Rex and serves PBR on tap is alright in my... (more)
