Middle School Sports - Football Mom Gets 'Schooled' By Son

By BusinessLife, published on Nov 3, 2010

It had come to this moment. My 13 year-old son, Jordan was dressed in a football uniform and ready to take the field. The only problem was, would one of the coaches call his name? It had been a long football season already. In fact, there was only one more game left to play after today.

As I sat in the stands outside my son's middle school, I scanned the sidelines on the other side to find my son. The middle school only had bleachers on one side. The visiting team was in front of the bleachers and in front of all of the moms, dads, sisters, brothers, grandparents, cousins, neighbors... (more)

Jewels Hold No Value For Me

By BusinessLife, published on Oct 23, 2010

Somewhere in my heart, lies a wounded child. She cries at night, alone, and sinks into the shadows of my soul. She sings a tragic melody of love, untouched and life un-lived. She is the bittersweet truth that haunts my shattered past and draws upon the blood of my survival.

Won't you walk with me awhile and share the sustenance of compassion? I have traveled from far away just for a breath of kindness to toss my windblown hair from my solemn and scarred, stone face. There is love to be found. I am more than what is seen, though still a lost soul, looking for your guidance to even fathom... (more)

Arlington National Cemetery: Where My Parents Remain PART I

By BusinessLife, published on Oct 21, 2010

I knew visiting the Arlington National Cemetery would cause some emotions to surface. I hadn't even planned on visiting the place. But with a friend by my side, I wanted to be accomodating to his interests as well. After all, we were in the nation's capital. It was my home as a child. It was Merrman Smith's, my father's home, as Dean of the White House Press Corps for U.P.I. (United Press International). It was my mother's home too. But now, both my mother and father's home was the Arlington National Cemetery.

Driving up to the main entrance, I noticed the throngs of people walking toward... (more)

NFL Fines Head-To-Head Hits: Is This A Fair Warning?

By BusinessLife, published on Oct 21, 2010

The National Football League decided to get tough on what it calls "dangerous and flagrant hits on the field." The first players to get fined included Altanta Falcons cornerback, Dunta Robinson ($50,000), Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison ($75,000) and New England Patriots safety Brandi Meriweather ($50,000).

"We can't and won't tolerate what we saw on Sunday. We've got to get the message to players that these devastating hits and head shots will be met with a very necessary higher standard of accountability. We have to dispel the notion that you get one free pass in these... (more)

Almost Time To Vote & I've Got Issues With The Issues

By BusinessLife, published on Oct 21, 2010

Not too long ago, there was a rally held in Washington, D.C. Though I wasn't in the District of Columbia for the rally, I had a friend with me and the two of us decided to take advantage of all there was to see as a tourist in the area. So, as the rally was held right in front of the Lincoln Memorial, and that was on the list of things to visit, there was a lot to hear and see whether one wanted to or not.

Many who spoke before hundreds who were on hand that day, talked of the need for change in leadership. This was nothing I was surprised to hear. And this was nothing that I felt was... (more)

From Sun To Moon

By BusinessLife, published on Oct 19, 2010

Her buttercup fingertips made lazy circles in the sand. She dreamed of her memories once shared with her man.How long had it been since she felt his caress? He had shown her the light that was sparkling, no less.He had captured her heart and made a crystal clear day. What more could she want? What more could she say?The day now turned dusk and left her alone. She felt a cool breeze that made a chill known. Her heart skipped a beat or was it a few?Her man was now here, the crystal day too.

Daisy Talk

By BusinessLife, published on Oct 12, 2010

I love him. He loves me not.I need him. He needs me not.

I await his arrival with anticipation. He looks forward to wine with dinner and later...proposing.

I take his hand in mine and feel a tingling sensation. He shakes my hand with eyes smiling upon my sister.I talk to him at dinner. He nods at my comments and asks my sister to a movie.I watch as two shadows come to form one. They have enjoyed the evening. He touches her cheek and they kiss.I watch her lips touch his, where mine should be.My sister is getting married...I still love him.I love him. He loves me not.I need him. He needs... (more)
