Man's Best Friend?

By melanie jean juneau, published on Apr 3, 2013

The relationship between man and beast is an interesting one. What is it about dogs that tempts us to repeat the age-old phrase, "dogs are man's best friend"? My husband contends that we love to make pets out of animals because without free will, they simply absorb all our affection and reflect undivided loyalty back to us. We revel in such devotion and inadvertently become part of a dog's pack as he bonds with us in a deep manner. This dynamic works for my husband because he is always the alpha of the pack but not for me. Why I don't even make the beta position. Nope I am usually the omega.... (more)

Living Within a Triangle of Light.

By melanie jean juneau, published on Dec 6, 2012

...light continually flow, surrounding our kids and animals. Inside this home of light our children and animals developed, often surprising our extended family and friends. Neighbouring farmers are especially flabbergasted when they catch glimpses of our animal's unusual behaviour.

The dog laid down with the cat and the cat stood up to the cow.

Mickey, our handsome tom cat, followed Michael around the farm as he did chores. Often Mickey would perch on a fence post and stand his ground as a cow licked his entire body, lifting him up to stand on his hind legs. When the cow... (more)

The Foxy Fox and The Dumb Dog

By melanie jean juneau, published on Dec 4, 2012

...You're infringing on my territory, my time."

Turning, he started to leisurely trot across our backyard into some bushes between the corral and the barn, did a u-turn, ran up the hill to double doors of the barn, made another u-turn and then ran down the hill into the corn. Meanwhile our dog was running circles around the garage with his nose right to the ground following the scent the fox had laid to distract him.

Frustrated, by his gullible dog, Dad pointed and yelled,

"Shadow, the fox ran over there."

Shadow looked up, tore across the yard, dove into the... (more)

Shadow: Quirky, Annoying but Always Loved

By melanie jean juneau, published on Oct 19, 2012

...it would take an entire chapter in a book to really flesh out his exploits.

1. Shadow grew up with cats.

They could cuddle up beside him or lay on top of him and he barely raised an eyebrow. He tossed mice and fish around like a cat and sometimes he played more like a cat than a dog.

2. Shadow could not stand to be left out of any activity. Thus the name Shadow.

For example, every week, we collected day old bread, distributed to families in need and of course fed our own family. Any extra went to the pigs. This jealous dog would dash in to the pigs' feeding... (more)

My Baby EATS Dogfood?!

By melanie jean juneau, published on Sep 21, 2012

...little bundle of happy energy, before he could dive into trouble, I would realize that Anthony's hands and feet would be still moving, as if he was trying to crawl in the air.

The pivotal point, where Anthony's crawling speed accelerated dramatically, was when he discovered the bowl of dog food. If the dog, Leisha, didn't come to eat right away or left food in his dish, Anthony was immediately crawling over to it as fast as his hands and knees would move. He'd grab a chunk of dried food in his hand and start gnawing on it.

Was he using it to teeth on?

Did I not feed... (more)

Not a Dog But a True Rescuer

By MUGISHO N.THEOPHILE, published on Mar 8, 2011

African dogs are known for being good hunters and not rescuers. But this dog’s story seems to convey some meanings to Africans who never value domestic animals except in case they can be sold to get money or slaughtered for their skin, meat and bones.

This Kenyan dog was searching for food for her new born puppies when he discovered a hidden human baby in the forest. This baby girl was two weeks old but abandoned to the forest’s sake. It has been proved than the majority of babies who are born and abandoned are girls. So, the dog discovered the baby girl in a forest south of the capital... (more)
