2nd Annual Brazilian Film Festival

Los Angeles-Americans have been in awe, intrigued and inspired by Brazilian culture for a long time. There is a large vibrant and thriving community of Brazilians in California thanks in part to the large influx who have settled into Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara and San Francisco. We can enjoy Brazilian cuisine, martial arts, dance, music, art and get a dose of Carnaval and a full range of Brazilian cinema (animation, documentaries, featured films and short films).

The 2nd Annual Brazilian Film Festival 2009 was held on March 12-15... (more)

A Spending Orgy, Of Biblical Proportion

By Amo, published on Mar 2, 2009

...their state economies, to the brink of bankruptcy, and government officials that failed in their initial oversight obligations, to safeguard the institutions that they were entrusted to protect.

All one needs to do is take a look at the two most influential states in the union, California and New York, to see how “progressive” governments truly work…and this is the economic template that President Obama envisions for the rest of America.

However, I truly believe, like young adolescents who think they’re invincible, we need to once again... (more)

Tavis Smiley Presents State Of The Black Union

By Ricky Ricardo, published on Mar 2, 2009

... people stayed around for the second section, and thanks to technology, people called friends, and family to join them. Another reason was that many people like me were at the The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program: 2009 African American Men’s Health & Empowerment Summit at the California Science Center, a couple of miles south of the Los Angeles convention Center. For three hours, the crowd was thoroughly engaged, entertained (funny comments), educated. I felt elated and left the Los Angels Coliseum invigorated as if I just left church after hearing a powerful sermon.

The New Mommunism

By VeroniqueChevalier, published on Feb 26, 2009

...the State Department!)Then there are those who seem to be enamored of the idea that women who have given birth are more 'connected' to the Earth, and are possessed of greater innate wisdom and respect for all other life forms. This flies in the face of a recent experience I had in Montecito, California (Home to Oprah Winfry, among others, and per capita one of the wealthiest communities on the planet).I was approaching the entrance to a local park, when a Soccer Mommunist at the wheel of the largest Range Rover ever built, rudely pulled out of the drive and cut me off, in her haste, no... (more)

Overstating The Case?

...5 previous quarterly earnings). For some this could be as low as $60/week. Forgetting about all the niggling technicalities, that equals out to about $18,800/year. Except that unemployment benefits are only available for a MAXIMUM of 26 weeks, i.e. half a year. (By comparison, the MAXIMUM in California, the most populous state in the union, is roughly $450/week, for a total of $11,700 per 26 weeks.) So, $9,400 of unemployment per year, $90,000 per U.S. employee would pay the GM workers to sit idly on their butts for 9 years, 6 months and 3 weeks and 2½ days, give or take. Now, I am... (more)

Sunshine Doesn't Sell Newspapers!

By Victoria Attanasio, published on Feb 15, 2009

...market. Here are some interesting numbers that I heard this week as quoted from the National Association of Realtors:

43 months

50% and 47%

84.9%

Here's what those numbers indicate and I know you will now be glad we are dealing with the housing market here in California. 43% is the amount of housing inventory currently on the market in Michigan. Of the homes that are selling in Michigan, 50% are foreclosures and 47% of those foreclosures are selling below $100K. I am not "bashing" Michigan, it's is just great example for this dose of reality. 84.9% is the... (more)

And He Laid His Hands On Them, And Healed Them (luke 4:40)

By Amo, published on Feb 13, 2009

... He’ll simply take from Peter to pay Paul, and leave the consequences for future generations and administrations, to work out.

He’ll wipe your nose and hand you a check, no questions asked and no need for fiscal discipline. After all you’re probably a “progressive state” like California or New York, never mind that in lala land you have the highest tax rates (10.3%) in the country, while in the Big Apple we enjoy a combined state and city tax rate of 10.5%...THE ONE will take care of you.

After all California is only $15 billion dollars in the red while New York is... (more)
