Things We Need to Teach Our Daughters (and Sons)

By Coach Phatty, published on Mar 30, 2014

As parents, there isn’t anything more precious in the world to us as our children. One of the most important things that we should teach our children (and encourage them to use) is wisdom…the ability to differentiate between good and bad, etc.

I recently came across some great “words of wisdom” that I thought that would be good to share for everyone who is a parent (or who will be someday). These are principles that we need to teach our daughters to know the difference between…

a man who flatters her and a man who compliments her

a man who spends money on her and... (more)

By Shantall Prado, published on Mar 20, 2014

Entering the workforce can be a scary and an exciting new experience. Your life is changing, and with change comes a new wardrobe! Torn jeans and Toms are no longer considered appropriate, and slacks and collared shirts have come to stay. Adjusting can be a difficult transition and finding a balance between your personal style and company policy can be stiffening. Here are some tips that may help you find your balance.

Accessorizing is key:

Try finding a good mixture of your personal style and what other coworkers wear. Try a slightly more conservative version or your regular... (more)

My Older Man Doesn't Want To Get Married,But Why ?

By Earn, published on Sep 27, 2013

He number of people in the U.S. who are remarrying has dropped by 40% over the past 20 years. In 1990, 50 out of every 1,000 Americans who were divorced or widowed chose to remarry. In 2011, that number dropped to only 29 for every 1,000. Meanwhile, the number of couples who are living together without marriage has risen significantly since the 90s. In 1996, there were 2.9 million unmarried couples living together. In 2012, there were 7.8 million.

How to be Famous

By Ely North, published on Jul 3, 2013

Dear Ely,

I want to be an important, famous person. I want to be a celebrity! I want everyone to know my name, and care about what I say, and follow my every move, and talk about me, and take my picture, and ask for my autograph. I want to see my own face on television and magazine covers. I want this more than anything in the world! The problem is that I don’t have any real talent. I’m not good at anything. How am I ever going to become famous and get people to pay attention to me when I have no abilities?

Sincerely,

Unfamous Fae

Life Is A Gift

By Ely North, published on Jun 23, 2013

Dear Ely,

Today was the worst day of my life. This morning my mom burnt my waffles, and we were out of delicious maple syrup. Then I missed the bus and had to run all the way to school. When I got there a bully punched me in the belly and stole my lunch money. At lunch I had to sit there hungry, longing for those dry crispy waffles. At recess a bird flew by and pooped on my head. All the kids laughed and called me “poopy head,” and I had to go to the nurse to have her wash the poop out of my hair. In the afternoon I failed my African Animals spelling test because I thought... (more)

Parenting Advice

By Ely North, published on May 8, 2013

Dear Ely,

My teenage daughter is a rotten little bitch. She argues with me about everything, and she insists she’s always right. And she’s so mean to me. She tells me that she hates me, that she must’ve been adopted, that I can’t possibly be her real mom because she’s so smart and I’m so stupid. When she sees how much it hurts me, she goes further and begs me to take her to live with her real mom. I’m only trying to raise her properly, set appropriate boundaries and teach her how to be responsible. I don’t deserve this kind of abuse! How can I unbitchify my daughter?

Anger Management

By Ely North, published on May 1, 2013

...an official warning, and if any other ugly incidents occur, I’ll be fired. How can I keep my temper under control?

Sincerely,

Angry Andy

******

Dear Angry Andy,

You sound like quite an asshole. (No offense.) That’s why I like writing this advice column – if I can help you out, that’ll be one less asshole in the world. One down, seven billion to go!

Which actually brings me to the solution to your problem: it’s a matter of perspective. You seem to think (at least subconsciously) that you are extremely important –... (more)

Pressure to Marry

By Ely North, published on Apr 21, 2013

Dear Ely,

My family is driving me crazy. They all want me to get married, like immediately, and they won’t stop riding my ass about it. The pressure starts at the top, with my grandmother. She keeps telling me that when she was my age, she was already married with three children. Once she starts, my aunts (my mom has four sisters) all chime in. “Are you dating anyone special?” “When are going to settle down and start a family?” It’s gone from funny to uncomfortable to really annoying, and now I try to avoid family gatherings just to escape the harassment. But my mom is... (more)

Saving Money Tips

By Ely North, published on Apr 17, 2013

...else. You can quite easily survive in this world without having to pay a penny for your necessities. How’s that for saving money!

I know what you’re thinking. I can hear the protests forming in your mind and rising up your throat before you even give voice to them: “Your advice is to become a homeless person! I’m not doing it. What kind of life is that?”

I understand your concern. We judge homeless people as the losers in the game of life, dropouts of society whose lifestyle is so obviously inferior to our own. But look at their lives more closely.... (more)

Jealousy, Obsession, and a Crazy Girlfriend

By Ely North, published on Apr 10, 2013

Dear Ely,

My new girlfriend is jealous, obsessive, and possessive. She reads my e-mails and goes through my phone to check my calls, texts, and pictures. She gets furious if I talk to other women. I think she might be psychotic, and I know she’s dangerous. “If you leave me, I’ll hunt you down.” “If I ever catch you with another woman, I’ll kill the bitch. Then I’ll kill you.” These are the types of things she says to me every day. We’ve only been dating for a few weeks! I want to get away from her, but I’m afraid she’ll actually carry out her threats. She carries a... (more)
