What Happened To MTV?

By 'Mean' Mike Duffau, published on Sep 8, 2007

My music education began on August 1st 1981 while watching the birth of MTV, Music Television. It was as simple as that...bands playing on the television set. I was glued to the screen and I couldn't get enough of AC/DC, Van Halen, Def Leppard, The Pretenders, Genesis, and so on and so on...I was about 7 or 8 years old at the time and I got so much from watching MTV during those infancy years that I could hold my own with teenagers of that time. I remember them asking me how did I know so much about music? "MTV man!" I really believed that I was ahead of my time. I felt like I was a child prodogy... (more)

What Have Snooki and Lana Del Rey Got In Common?

By neil6, published on Mar 8, 2012

...now regrets drinking the way she did that night. Are you staring to get the picture here? One minute a party-loving girl with an 'in your face' personality and the next a careful expectant mother and soon-to-be wife. She has also said that this part of her life is:- "too important to screw up". MTV are certainly going to miss her absence, as she was a big part of the reason people tuned into Jersey Shore. Does all of this constitute an upheaval in her life and the ushering in of her own personal 'new age/new era? It becomes a simple rhetorical question doesn't it? That's the beauty of... (more)

Lady Gaga: Trendy or Timeless?

By Deanna Meiresonne, published on Feb 1, 2011

Not like my take is a whole bundle of importance, but when I see something positive I do enjoy sharing that inspiration with other people.

[[[Desperate A.D.D. moment here: I'm waiting to be picked up for an 8am yoga wakeup call, and I just stepped outside to see if my ride was here, and even though it's a gray, slightly dismal morning, that first hit of morning air, when everything is still, and I wasn't rushing to my car, mmmm so refreshing. It was nice to stand outside for a moment and sun salute the sky with my GIANT ASS COFFEE MUG CLENCHED FIRMLY IN MY LITTLE FISTS OF MIGHT without... (more)

3 Twilight Troubles

By Glenn T, published on Sep 21, 2011

...up an ill-conceived and impossible story with adolescent themes and a disjointed style that likely reads better as text messages than on an actual page. The bottom line is that most young adult literature is written exclusively for the same generation that can currently make sense out of MTV’s programming and cars shaped like boxes, which ought to tells us how little it should appeal to grown ups. Meyer’s cross-generational appeal is not a cause for celebration, it’s a cause for concern.

Necessity

By LaurenK, published on Oct 21, 2011

...I could switch on "Big Brother". I never understood the addiction. I didn’t stay in touch with any of those friends, I didn’t need them, even in my darkest days. When the dog died I curled up on the couch to watch "Lassie". When mum died the main thing I wrestled with was the remote - "MTV" or "Entertainment Tonight"? Whatever I decided I would turn the volume up really loud, taping the decided program so I could watch it on repeat. The television was my therapist. I was allowed to sit and be completely accepted. I could speak if I liked or say nothing. Eventually when I felt... (more)

An Angel From Hell by Ryan A. Conklin

By Miranda, published on Oct 25, 2011

I finally finished An Angel From Hell by Ryan Conklin. I have to admit this book took me awhile to finish. Ryan Conklin was a castmate on MTV's Real World and had a fun, happy, easy going personality. He was the funny all American guy with the guitar and hilarious songs. He had a bit of a temper but it took quite awhile to push him that far.

At the end of the season he receives heart breaking news that he was being called back for another round of active duty. It was a hard episode to watch and when I found out later he had written a book I was ecstatic and had to read it!

Interview with Vincent Zandri, author of Moonlight Falls

By boomergirl, published on Feb 21, 2010

...and parks inside a hidden area just to catch a glance of his little boy getting off the school bus is real.

Q. What was the inspiration behind the story? Where were you when you came up with the idea?

I believe I was down in Manhattan with my then Delacorte editor, Jacob Hoye (now MTV Books), when I came across a story about a man who survived a suicide attempt and lived with a piece of bullet shrapnel still stuck in his brain. I’ve also been fascinated with a rarely spoken about story from my family history in which my paternal grandfather committed suicide by slicing his... (more)

When will I learn about Craigslist and Jobs?

By cranelegs, published on Mar 2, 2010

...Suckered again! I never learn my lesson about Craigslist. Oh, I promise you, I'll be back in there as soon as this little debacle becomes a flicker in the distant writing employment horizon.

Can you believe that? "Must try to understand almost any facet of life on earth!" Marilyn vos Savant type stuff. I can't even figure out MTV's "Jersey Shore", and I grew up in Jersey. This was God awful this was! It's back to the drawing board for me. Unbelievable, "almost any facet of life on earth"! $16 bucks an hour down the tubes.

What a set back! What a terrible turn of events!
