Citizen Journalism vs. Traditional Journalism
...– we all know that – so mass appeal is where their interests lie and the citizen journalists are left to cover the niches. Therefore, one could argue, how comprehensive is traditional journalism if it is shaped by a powerful sponsor with vested interests?
Not getting paid for citizen journalism, while this indicates purity of intention, could also include poorly written pieces and content emanating from those with undisguised axes to grind. But we have also heard of “right wing” or “left wing” newspapers in the traditional space. On the other hand, traditionalists are... (more)

Writer's Forum:: Citizen Journalism... What's The Point?
... medium in which we are all engaged.... the appropriateness of content, the tone of language, the depth of research behind claims, and arguments about why or why not things bear publication at all.
Quite a few authors who are involved here are deeply committed to the thing that it "citizen journalism," and in this, approach the work thus seriously. Others perhaps see it as more of a social network with a shared blog component, in which content is barely if at all policed, and serves no particular civic or social purpose.
Instead of continuing to merely argue content, purpose... (more)

Local California Paper Taps into Citizen Journalism Market
...photos, events and opinions on their neighborhood YourHub.com Web site. Every week we take the postings from the Web site and print five different YourHub.com sections and deliver them with the Tuesday Ventura County Star." Hot Diggity Damn, the local press wants a "piece" of the "citizen Journalism" pie. It's a blatant "cake and eat it too" attempt. Same old, same old, at the daily press, but why not try to carve a little niche out of this new concept?, thinks the Newspaper. There seems to be a "fundamental problem"... While, "YourHub.com" is the home website, the main purpose of... (more)

The College Journalism Professor and Citizen Newspapers
...and supplement or complement the reporting of news. Citizen Newspapers tend to be on the cutting edge and subsequently, can influence main stream media reporting by alternative methods. I will use a perverse analogy for an example. As porno pulls main stream cinema in their direction, citizen journalism is pulling mainstream media in its direction. Citizen journalism has a direct connection that a traditional newspaper doesn’t allow. It provides a continuing connection, an involvement, with the source. One of the most rewarding parts of being a professional journalist is being able ... (more)

Every citizen is a reporter - the story of OhmyNews
...and his dedicated staff launched an English language version, OhmyNews International, and over 40,000 citizen reporters now contribute to both the English and Korean language sites. With major news outlets such as MSNBC.com posting photos, videos and text from citizen reporters and citizen journalism sites such as BrooWaha sparking heated debate in academic circles and editorial pages of major newspapers, OhmyNews has seemingly charted a steady course for itself since it began in 2000 and is now poised to take advantage of the newfound interest in citizen journalism. While most of... (more)

BrooWaha: Mobilizing citizen journalists
...that it is, at best, some peoples' valiant efforts at capturing "the truth", but inevitably missing some, and, at worst, a forum for biases to openly pollute the minds of citizens under the guise of state-sponsored legitimacy. Poh Si: What makes BrooWaha different from other citizen journalism news sites? Ariel: BrooWaha puts a very strong emphasis on its authors and values them more than other websites who just post articles and end there. At BrooWaha, authors who write well are rewarded by their peers with popularity points which, in turn, make successful authors powerful ... (more)

The Brouhaha over Citizen Newspapers revealed
...well photographed, pooch. There is discussion and revelations as to the whys and the hows Ariel started on this path. All interesting stuff. But, well, golly gee, it might just be me, but the first two sentences set a tone that maybe this wasn't going to be a really fair discussion of "Citizen Journalism" pros or cons. Quoting Ms. Saar, "A woman in Venice Beach reviews "The Lion King" and declares it the best musical she's seen--of the four she's ever seen." This 59 year old male had absolutely no interest in seeing a play called "The Lion King". That's something for my grandkids. Then,... (more)

The Edge of Writing and Creativity
...for authors, new's journalists, citizen journalists and creative people to express their views without fear of censorship. With few exceptions Broo has stayed true to this driving force.
Broo was the first citizen journal of its kind. It has been a leader at encouraging citizen journalism. Based out of Los Angeles and started by Ariel Vardi, the vision was to be a hip, cutting edge, online journal that provides writers with a safe-haven to express their thoughts. It was Ariel that said "keep Broo hip, happening and a place where writers can hone their craft and be... (more)

Trying to balance the year that was
...after decades of war, drought, pestilence, genocide and famine to clinch the top spot for growth over the next decade. The PIIGS (the second I is for Italy) of Europe realized that taxes, if paid, collected and spent wisely, do make sense and provide for a better standard of living. Citizen journalism came of age when the quality of articles continued to improve, diversify and outpace content from traditional channels (my journalist friends will disagree with me here) and social media actually led to the fall of corrupt governments. Authors reclaimed ground by embracing direct... (more)

Ignorance, Arrogance and Sock Puppets
...web sites or writing for money. That at least some of these folks seem still incapable of understanding a very basic concept about publishing websites (the de facto “business” that any “citizen journalist” is necessarily working in) leaves me frankly questioning the value of the citizen journalism revolution that purportedly is going to change the web and the world.
Were I to grow weary of the ignorance and intolerance and abandon my Broosterism I would certainly be in good company. More than a year ago Veronique Chevalier took umbrage at her anonymous critics, posted a... (more)
