The 80s Are Back!

By D. E. Carson, published on May 29, 2008

Okay, I don’t usually do this, but last weekend I wrote a review of the new Indiana Jones movie and got the following response from Morgana:

The 80's are back: Gasoline is up and Japanese cars are in, I think the Celtics and Lakers are up from what the guys tell me, and Indy has another adventure.

Which then prompted me to write:

The 80s are back? Cool! Now, where's the hot babes in spandex with leg warmers and really BIG hair??? Time to pull out my Flock of Seagulls, Whitesnake, Def Lepperd, Van Halen and Rick Springfield records and party like it's 1999! All we need... (more)

Thank you! Mr. President

By Caballero_69, published on Apr 29, 2011

As reported well in Reader Supported News, President Obama has secured the release of his long-form birth certificate even though the state of Hawaii has only provided short-form certificates since the mid-1980s. He did so because so many people persisted in complaining about the absence of the long-form document that this false controversy drowned out serious discussion and thoughtful consideration of real issues. The History of Hawthorne

By 'Mean' Mike Duffau, published on Oct 24, 2007

"There's a new jewel in the crown of Southern California. The beautiful new town of Hawthorne."

That was a newspaper advertisement that appeared on January 6, 1906. It was also advertised as the town "between the City and the Sea." Built and sold homes on small down and long time payments.

A lot could be had for $75 with a $1 down payment and a mortgage of $1 per month. Hawthorne is centrally located in the South Bay section of Los Angeles County, which is about 14 miles south/southwest of downtown Los Angeles and about 14 miles northwest of downtown Long Beach. The town of... (more)

Belgium - The land of... of what, exactly?

By Simon, published on Oct 11, 2006

Truth be told, gentle reader, even the French know very little about Belgium, despite these two countries' immediate proximity: they are indeed right next to each other, which is a source of immense shame for the apparently, eternally "arrogant" French; and a mixed blessing for the Belgians.

Why a mixed blessing, might you ask? Well on the one hand, France has reasonably pleasant weather, delicious food and wine, beautiful landscapes, the Eiffel Tower and much more. On the other hand, however, France is cursed with the presence of the some of more conceited humans ever to have walked... (more)
