Ten Ways To Make Your Summer Last

By Venditto, published on Sep 17, 2007

I've even heard those in the hipster elite compare a NYC summer to having a naked, fat epileptic chick wrapped loosely in saran wrap squat on your chest and just sweat and giggle for three months straight. But to those foolish naysayers I say: You are weak, narrow-minded sheep! Take off your blinders of sobriety, strap on your beer goggles of enlightenment and LIVE! Summer is a time when anything and everything becomes doable. It's the season when, perennially, the planet wakes from its slumber, comes alive, spreads its legs and dares us to dive in for a taste. Summer in the city is a veritable... (more)

Meet the Bastard Children of the Neo- Modern Art Movement

By Venditto, published on Jun 7, 2007

For the past five years or so there’s been a healthy artistic anarchy brewing beneath the Highline on far west 21st street. Right under our collective nose nests a hive for,” artists, programmers, hackers, activists, technologists, kids, and adults,” to study, create, and collaborate on images that marry the sultry sexiness inherent in the world of computer programming with the sweetly misunderstood progressive neo- modern art movement. The result: Eyebeam! A warehouse sized imaginarium that acts as a live studio replete with physical labs and computer work stations. The functioning... (more)

High School The Way It Should Have Been

By Venditto, published on May 18, 2007

"If pain is comedy than high school was hilarious"- So states the tagline for Teen Movie High, an improvised homage to everything for which John Hughes stood. Teen Movie High is an hour long improvised tour de force of ridiculousness. For anyone who considers Sixteen Candles and Weird Science timeless classics or anybody who believes Judd Nelson really is a misunderstood genius- this show will blow your proverbial socks off. I recently went to watch and review Teen Movie High for supercool event site: UNCOOLKIDS.COM. The following is what I experienced. The evening started out with director,... (more)

Totally Mental

By Venditto, published on May 12, 2007

Sam Eaton is a mentalist. A mentalist is a consummate bullshitter; they hone their skills of deception into a razor sharp art form. Armed only with a mental agility developed over years of practice, Sam Eaton has created an off Broadway show to showcase his extreme talents. That show is The Quantum Eye: Deception. I recently went to review this superbly staged show for UNCOOLKIDS.COM. Below is a slice of the review: With his hair helmet shining, noted mentalist and super cool guy, Sam Eaton took the stage and announced: “TONIGHT THERE WILL BE NO SECRETS!” I winced as I couldn’t... (more)

Beers & Brats + Chicks & Sunshine = The Best Bar Ever!

By Venditto, published on May 7, 2007

This is the second in the BEST BAR EVER series. A continuing suite of articles spotlighting hidden alcoholic treasures throughout the city. ------------------------------ A couple of Sundays ago the temperature was in the 70's, the Yankees were playing the Red Sox, all was right in the world and I skipped church to get sloppy drunk at The Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden- the last original beer garden left in the five boroughs. This little slice of heaven is the perfect Eden to wallow away a sunshiny afternoon. It’s a boozy oasis smack dab in the middle of that Grecian stronghold: Astoria.... (more)

Jell-O Brings Perverts and Feminists Together At Last!

By Venditto, published on Apr 30, 2007

If cable television has taught me anything it’s that there’s a fine line between feminism and soft core porn. That lesson was illuminated for me in all its glory the other night as I experienced for the first time: AMATUER FEMALE JELLO WRESTLING! As run by Dana Sterling (the Grande Dame of Jell-O wrestling) and her crack staff, this is definitely NOT your creepy Uncle Jack’s back room dollar bill fueled filth fest. And honestly, I would’ve been cool if it were, but what these ladies have created is a for girls by girls good time that’s more about showmanship and sisterhood than it... (more)

Drunken Vampire Karaoke

By Venditto, published on Apr 24, 2007

I never realized what true devotion was until I experienced the love on display at the Buffy Sing- a- Long at the IFC Center. For those of you who don't know: this is a staged screening of the all singing Buffy episode: "Once More With Feeling". As the show unspools on the big screen, actors lip sync and pantomime the action on stage. Much audience participation, glitter and bubble blowing ensues. I was shocked as I approached the theater and saw a line stretching up sixth ave. I was even more taken aback by the crowd. It was a surreal mix of middle aged, overweight comic book collectors... (more)

Gettin Freaky in Coney Island

By Venditto, published on Apr 22, 2007

In the shadow of the Wonder Wheel lies one of the last vestiges of a classic American institution: The Freak Show. Established in 1985 on Surf Avenue one can find Shideshow by the Seashore. It’s a theater devoted to bearded women, sword swallowers, knife throwers and chicken necked geeks. Every weekend they host burlesque shows, aerial acts and even an old fashioned 10 in 1. For those of you not of carnie stock, a 10 in 1 is the classic freak show set up. An event where for less than the price of a movie ticket, a person gets to see 10 freaks all under one roof. I went for a visit on... (more)

Bacon Infused Vodka + Free Pony Rides = BEST BAR EVER

By Venditto, published on Apr 19, 2007

This is the first in the BEST BAR EVER series. A continuing suite of articles spotlighting hidden alcoholic treasures throughout the city. ----------------------------- I was minding my own business walking down Avenue A. I was half a block north of Houston when I saw a bar, The Double Down Saloon, with a sign in the window that intrigued me: "Free Pony Rides Inside!" I'm a connoisseur of the finer things in life so I stepped in for a looksee. The bar bopped to the beat of Louis Prima jiving out of the juke and Japanese anime slithering across the various TV screens. The bartender... (more)
