Wilmington Nc Is The Next Hollywood?

By sanity check, published on Jan 15, 2008

Well, the news here in North Carolina is that Wilmington is about to be the next Hollywood, only with state liquor stores, tens of thousands of devout Baptists and a series of social institutions right out of the middle ages. There is a language barrier as most folks in Wilmington speak Southern and only use English as a second Language.

There no doubt are some advantages to being on the opposite end of Interstate 40 but frankly, it doesn’t appear the powers that be in La La land have given this enough serious thought. To be polite, the benefits of filming... (more)

Rosa Brooks Would You please just shut up

By sanity check, published on Aug 4, 2007

It’s not surprising that a woman like Rosa Brooks who sits on her abundant ass all day and contributes nothing more to our society than her opinion, would find fault with those individuals within our society who accept occupational challenges that could result in death or serious injury. I am referring to a recent column authored by Ms. Parks entitled "Heroism and The Language of Fascism" published in the LA Times on August 3, 2007, Ostensibly to bemoan the overuse of the term “hero”. What is first disturbing is the use, or rather the abuse of the word Fascism. A quick check of the Webster's... (more)

Yes Virginia, Vietnam Vets were spit on

By sanity check, published on Jul 19, 2007

Lembcke, a staunch anti-war activist, member of "Vietnam Veterans Against the War", and to this day, a leading critic of U.S. foreign policy has become the sole "academic" reference for the repudiation of the spitting myth. To say he is biased would be an understatement. To the surprise of no one, the media and many current anti-war groups quickly accepted Lembcke's assertions in an attempt to rehabilitate an anti-war movement devoid of credibility. Unfortunately, to anyone who reads his book, Lembcke's work is flawed at every level and wouldn't be worthy of mention except that it is now... (more)

Honor amongst Thieves: Debunking the National Honor Society

By sanity check, published on Jun 1, 2007

About this time of year, high school students and their parents are subjected to the National Honor Society application process. According to the Web page at NHS, The National Honor Society is the “nation's premier organization recognizing outstanding middle level and high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character”. NHS is supposedly a feather in the cap of deserving young men and woman who have earned membership in this prestigious organization that boasts “honor” as it’s cornerstone. While many communities, most notably... (more)

Illegal Alien Workers Cost Americans Money : Part 3

By sanity check, published on May 22, 2007

The facts are simple and indisputable: Illegal Mexican workers are largely uneducated and receive very low pay. Poor people can't afford to pay for their health care, may not be able to provide for their children, and often require support from social services to make ends meet. It is a day-to-day struggle for poor people to find enough money to buy food, provide shelter and clothes. Illegals are poor. Children born to illegals residing in the U.S. are considered residents and the families of these children waste no time applying for "benefits" for their American children including but not... (more)

Part 2- Myth: Illegal Mexican Workers are law-abiding

By sanity check, published on May 22, 2007

It is counterintuitive to assume that someone can sneak into the country, obtain a fake Social Security card and/or counterfeit birth certificate, obtain a driver license, falsify employment applications to illegally obtain work in the United States and then become a model citizen. In fact, these illegals become the unwitting pawns in a host of illegal activities that are only possible because they are illegally here in the first place. The presence of illegal Mexican workers enables businesses to "pay under the table" and compromises tax collection, social security, workmen's compensation,... (more)

The Disturbing Side of Illegal Immigrant Workers

By sanity check, published on May 21, 2007

For those who have to deal with illegal immigrants on a daily basis, the reality is far from the myths perpetuated by the American press. Illegal immigration is a serious problem undermining the way of life in many small towns across the United States. The truth is easy to find, but only if a person wants objective answers.

This is the first of a three part series on illegal immigration and it should serve as a wake up call to all those that have never set foot in a manufacturing plant and lack any first hand experience with the circumstances illegal workers face. For the record, I... (more)
