The Peacock of El Cerrito

By rjlight, published on Jul 27, 2007

I was in the hills of El Cerrito, California in what seemed a normal neighborhood, driving my kids to the park down the street when I passed a peacock taking a stroll on the sidewalk. I almost ran off the road as I yelled to my kids that I had just seen a peacock. They of course thought I had been mistaken. As soon as I could, I made a u-turn so that we could see the neighborhood peacock up close. At this time the peacock had turned into a driveway to show off his feathers. The expression “proud as a peacock” is quite accurate – he was eating up the attention. Another car pulled up and... (more)

La Lohan Letdown

By rjlight, published on Jul 25, 2007

I'm probably the only one who feels sorry for the girl, but I do. Let's face it, she's had one messy upbringing, and too much money and success too fast. It's less than two weeks since she has gotten out of rehab, and Lindsay Lohan has a new mugshot all over the news. Early this morning at approximately 2:15am in Santa Monica, Lindsay Lohan was arrested with a blood alcohol level of around .13, and a stash of cocaine in her jeans pocket. There is still confusion as to what was going on--some reports have stated she was chasing a former assistant; however, the latest report states that she was... (more)

Cell Phone Possible Cause of Car Crash

By rjlight, published on Jul 15, 2007

A 17-year-old and her four other friends hit a tractor-trailer in a fatal NY car crash at the end of June. Cell phone records are indicating that text-messaging might have been a cause in the car crash. The driver's phone was in use when the crash happened--however, there is no way of knowing if the driver was the one sending text messages. The teenager and four passengers in the car died in the crash. They had just graduated from High School together a few days previously. A few minutes before the first 911 call was made regarding the crash, the driver had been talking to a friend following... (more)

Enough with the Up-sell!

By rjlight, published on Jul 12, 2007

I was sitting in the coffee shop and heard the lady order her tall coffee. The barista asked if she would "like to try a larger size." That was my first experience hearing a barista trying to up-sell. I suddenly felt like I was in a drive-through line hearing about the gallon size drink. I was getting a relaxing hair cut. After my relaxing wash and cut I got the sales pitch -- you know, do you want to buy the shampoo? Your hair could really use the hubba-hubba style wax. Please don't mess up my relaxing experience--no, I just want the cut and style please. Or how about the facial and the sales... (more)

A Decade in Jail--Injustice Continues

By rjlight, published on Jun 27, 2007

In 1997, Santos Reyes was arrested for forging a DMV test for his cousin. His cousin needed a driver’s license to work as a roofer—only he couldn’t read. Santos Reyes thought it would be easier to take the test for him than to teach him how to read. His cousin needed the job quickly. Reyes attempted to take the test for his cousin and was arrested and charged with perjury. The District Attorney could have charged Reyes with a misdemeanor, violating Vehicle Code section 20 (making false statements on a driver’s license application). Reyes then would have had to serve at the most, six... (more)

A Fair to Remember

By rjlight, published on Jun 22, 2007

The sun is shining, the kids are out of school, and there’s a subtle smell of kettle corn mixed with cow manure in the air. Yes, it's fair time again. It’s time to pay $4 for corn on the cob and $11 for a margarita. It’s time to demonstrate your skill at tossing pennies onto lily pads for valuable prizes — such as, stuffed pink flamingos. Yes, it’s time to fight the crowds to snap a picture of junior screaming in the dinosaur car going around in a circle. All kidding aside, the fair can be an enjoyable experience if you plan a little beforehand and are a bit flexible. Many fairs offer... (more)

The Runs to Lose Weight?

By rjlight, published on Jun 19, 2007

The Federal Drug Administration has just approved an over the counter weight-loss drug that has a nasty side effect - diarrhea. Apparently it hasn't stopped anyone from trying the drug. The drug brand name is alli (pronounced ally) manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and claims to help you lose more weight than just eating a low-fat diet alone. However, if you eat too fast or consume too much fat, that fat will slip right through you--quickly. According to the package -- for every 5 pounds you lose through healthy dieting you could lose 2 to 3 pounds more by using alli. Alli costs approximately... (more)

Movie Year of the Sequel or Horror?

By rjlight, published on Jun 14, 2007

Shrek the Third, Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End --have we seen all the sequels yet? Oh no, we've just started. Ocean's 13 is in its first week and we still have Fantastic Four 2, Live Free or Die Hard, The Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 3. I don't think I can possibly name all of the sequels, but I guess I better not forget another installment of Harry Potter with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix releasing in July. And the end of the year we can anticipate National Treasure's sequel. It would seem it's the year of the sequel, but what about all those horror... (more)

Will Marie Osmond fill the empty 'View' seat?

By rjlight, published on Jun 1, 2007

There are many rumors going around as to who will replace Rosie O'Donnell on the popular talk show The View. One of the possiblities is Marie Osmond--very different from the departed Rosie. Other names being considered are Kathy Griffin, Wanda Sykes, Gayle King, Bette Midler, Kelly Ripa and Roseanne Barr. Earlier rumors had mentioned Joan Rivers, Connie Chung and Whoopi Goldberg. Roseanne Barr apparently has said that she would want the job, however, something tells me she won't be selected. I think the next to fill the ever-changing View seat will be a less controversial female. Rosie O'Donnell... (more)

Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Fit

By rjlight, published on May 25, 2007

I called my husband from the other room to ask which rear end picture matched mine. It took him awhile – he had to look over my derriere quite extensively and finally came up with a match. I was researching the online jean market. Well, specifically, I was researching the website http://www.zafu.com. My husband thought I was shopping--me shopping online? I had work to do, I had articles to write--research was what I was into--only research. Zafu is touted as the next best thing to your own personal fashion guru. Zafu is a website designed to help you find the best jean for your figure. The... (more)
