Facebook Foibles

By Ed Attanasio, published on Apr 28, 2009

I'm new to Facebook, so I don't understand all of the little nuances, but I can already see thatthe whole Facebook experience isgoing to present some problems for me.

For instance, I am friends with a lot of people on Facebook who I really don't even know. Sometimes they put something interesting up there, and I am compelled to comment. But, when I do, I'm sure they're saying, "Who the hell is this person?" "I'm a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend....." is how I want to reply, sounding even dumber and making the situation even more ludicrous.

Then, I have... (more)

Say Hello To Algae!

By Ed Attanasio, published on Apr 19, 2009

As gas prices fluctuate and threaten to rise again, the world is racing to find new sources of fuel. From cooking grease to corn oil; from electricity to steam; from natural gas to propane—scientists, engineers and even backyard hobbyists are clamoring to find the “next big thing” when it comes to powering the cars of the not-so-distant future. It’s a race and whoever wins it will be hailed as the next Henry Ford or Albert Einstein.

Now as it turns out, they’re turning to the sea.

Algae biofuel is all the rage right now, and although it’s... (more)

It's Alive!

By Ed Attanasio, published on Apr 14, 2009

We went to Alive! the other day and to say that I was reticent is putting it mildly. I must admit, I am not exactly what you’d call a disciple of this raw food movement. I am still very comfortable and quite used to food that has been cooked. I will take a boiled carrot (al dente, of course—I gotta have that crunch) over a raw one every time. I like sushi and steak tartare, but I’ll opt for the cooked versions over the raw ones if given the choice.

But, when we visited Alive! recently, we were more than pleasantly surprised. Described on their menu as a “serene... (more)

Congress Carefully Considers Cash 4 Clunkers

By Ed Attanasio, published on Apr 12, 2009

You know that old Studebaker your Uncle Freddie has in his back yard? The one that makes strange noises and smokes like a paper factory every time he takes it out for a spin? Everyone knows someone who has an old beater like Uncle Freddie’s.

Well, if you can convince old Freddie to give the vehicle to the government and buy a hybrid, for instance, he might just benefit from a stimulus package designed just for people like him who are holding on to old cars that would be better for the environment and everyone in general if they were taken off the road.

If a proposed... (more)

Punking Craigs List, The Sequel

By Ed Attanasio, published on Mar 12, 2009

A local newspaper ran another ad for San Franicsco beat reporters, offering a little more than minimum wage. Angry and insulted, I sent them this response:

"I am respondingto the job you posted on Craigs List. I believe that I am an ideal fit for the position, because I'ma team player, aprime mover andthe wind beneath your wings.

Hey, I admit I will never be Ernest Hemingway (I tried for a while, but I hated all the booze and the bullfighting, not to mention the uncomfortable beard), but I am pretty damn good!

I don't go out looking for stories. Stories come to me. Most... (more)

The 5 Ugliest Cars Ever Made

By Ed Attanasio, published on Mar 1, 2009

Let’s face it—for every great car we produce on this planet, they’re bound to be a couple of real duds. Unfortunately, failure is just a fact of life. These vehicles probably looked really good on the drawing board, but in reality they were design disasters that are best forgotten.

Not only did my Bottom 5 look awful, but they also performed poorly. Presenting the 5 Ugliest Cars Ever Made:

1.) 1975 AMC Pacer: One of the lowest points in the history of car making, the AMC Pacer (pictured) was a disaster of great proportions on many levels—from the 95hp inline 6-cylinder engine... (more)

A Fun-filled Night From Circus Finelli!

By Ed Attanasio, published on Feb 22, 2009

Next weekend I have been invited to review an all-female clown troupe called Circus Finelli. After reading all the wonderful reviews, I can’t wait. Circus Finelli is a 40-minute comedy stage show filled with laughs, acrobatics, juggling, dance and live music. The theme is a “circus gone awry” in which each performer courageously faces disaster in her own way, transforming small problems into big catastrophes.

You heard me correctly just now when I referred to these clowns as “her”. That’s right-all of the clowns in Circus Finelli are women. Described as “four crazy, unruly, unpredictable,... (more)

This Is The Pits!

By Ed Attanasio, published on Feb 18, 2009

I recently received a disturbing note from Donna Reynolds at BAD RAP about another dog fighting bust (this one in North Carolina) where the shelter, wants to destroy the victims. For those of you who don’t know, BAD RAP is a great organization that has saved and socialized many pit bulls in this country, as well as helped to educate people about bully breeds.

The Michael Vick case was very public, and the outcome was driven by that publicity. Those dogs were saved, but unfortunately, less high profile cases rarely end the same way. The Humane Society of the United States consistently... (more)

Everyone's Tokin' About Michael Phelps!

By Ed Attanasio, published on Feb 7, 2009

Michael Phelps made a mistake by letting himself be photographed taking a hit of pot from a bong. Just look at the photo. He’s using it all wrong. For one, he doesn’t have the proper amount of water in there. Consequently, the smoke he inhaled was probably very harsh. A little crushed ice would have also been a smart move. In addition, it appears as though he’s not using the carburetor properly.

Poor Michael Phelps. Who knew his best event was the 420 Freestyle?

Sure, I jest. I can’t help it. But, I think this incident illustrates two things: 1.) Michael Phelps used really poor... (more)
