A Singleton Christmas

By Deborah Horton, published on Dec 17, 2010

Christmas can be overwhelming for the single among us. They are constantly bombarded with lovely pictures of people sharing the holidays together as couples or families. Television ads are overloaded with the buying of jewelry, especially engagement rings. Cologne and perfume ads filled with relationship nuances. Some who are single fall into the blue Christmas pit of despair, but there is much that one can do to make themselves merry and also to possibly find a new relationship.

Keep yourself open to possibilities. There are always lots of gatherings where a single person can meet... (more)

Concussions, Goodell, and Walk Outs

By Deborah Horton, published on Dec 17, 2010

A new report has come out that there are even more concussions in the NFL this season than before. Despite the rules on "illegal hits" more players are getting concussions. In the 21st century, we can almost rebuild an entire human with prosthetics, bionics, and transplants and yet no one is able to make a better football helmet. Hard to believe, and yet it is true. Aaron Rogers suffered his 2nd concussion and by all accounts a pretty bad one as he spent the Monday after the game in bed from hitting his head on the ground. Not from an illegal hit, but for his head hitting the ground.... (more)

Those Who Can't

By Deborah Horton, published on Dec 15, 2010

There are the teams that can and do and then there are those who seemingly can't and don't. This NFL season has been one of surprise and unpredictability. There are a few teams who just can't seem to get it together, some despite a lot of hype and a lot of talent.

The New York Jets - They started out great. The sports media was all over them like white on rice claiming how great they were. They had plenty of bluster and they backed it up some of the time. Most of the time though, they got lucky with last minute wins and then they got plastered by the Patriots. They lost the next... (more)

Love Is Funny

By Deborah Horton, published on Dec 14, 2010

Over the years, I have found that a little humor goes a long way. If you are in a relationship with someone who can make you laugh, you truly have something that can last a lifetime.

Most women I know if you ask them what they look for in a relationship, one of the first things they will say is a sense of humor. Someone who can make you laugh, who can make you smile, who can make your heart smile, that is someone with whom most women can build a lifetime relationship. Laughter truly is the bed medicine and in a relationship it can be like an elixir of long lasting life.

Worst Nightmare

By Deborah Horton, published on Dec 14, 2010

So, it has come to pass, the worst nightmare of any National League baseball fan and most especially any fan of a team other than the Phillies in the NL East. That's right, Cliff Lee has taken his talent back to Philly. You know, the team with Oswalt, Halladay, Hamels, and now Lee in their rotation. Worst nightmare ever.

Cliff Lee shocked everyone yesterday by signing with his old team the Phillies. He signed for far less years than either the Rangers or Yankees were offering, 5 instead of 7. He signed for far less money, 100 million rather than 140 or 150 million. He signed with... (more)

Smoke and Mirrors

By Deborah Horton, published on Dec 13, 2010

As a freelance writer, I am always on the lookout for more work. I go through hundreds of potential writing opportunities every week. Recently, I ran across one that made me more than a little concerned about the many who are venturing into the online dating world.

The job was for someone to write a person's online dating profile and then, to answer all their online dating responses. Immediately, thoughts of misrepresentation came to my mind. Having someone else write about you and answer your email seems to open all kinds of doors to a complete misrepresentation of the facts. A... (more)

Those Who Can Do

By Deborah Horton, published on Dec 13, 2010

There are some NFL teams that seem to be ahead of the curve this season and some who were hyped to be ahead of the game, but as time goes on we see they are just not all that. Those who can do and those who can't - don't make it to the playoffs.

The New England Patriots are far and away the best team in football. They have beaten several of the "so called" top teams. They were counted out when they started the season with their young defense. They were counted out when they traded away star receiver Randy Moss. The one thing that people never take into account is that you can never... (more)

Opposites Attract

By Deborah Horton, published on Dec 13, 2010

I've always heard the phrase opposites attract. People seem to say it continually about relationships. I don't know how many times I heard in my younger years, you know what they say opposites attract. Maybe when you're very young and rebellion is your main goal, but in a long term stable relationship - that has never once been my experience.

When some are young they tend to gravitate to the opposite in relationships. A lot of times it is in rebellion to their adult guidance. Sometimes it is just for the shock value of it. Sometimes it is for the adrenaline rush if the person they... (more)

And The 2010 Heisman Goes To....

By Deborah Horton, published on Dec 13, 2010

Cam Newton of course. There is no doubt that Newton will win the trophy. As soon as the NCAA decided to say he had not violated the rules, he was absolutely going to be the winner and everyone knew it. Tonight's ceremony is merely a formality.

Not everyone agrees that Newton should win. There are some Heisman voters who did not vote for him, but not enough to change the outcome. Those who did vote for him fall into two categories. Those who say that because the NCAA did not rule him ineligible, he gets their first place vote based on his stats. They don't say that they are voting... (more)
