From the NYT:
As voters in Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont and Texas headed to the polls potentially to decide the Democratic nomination for the presidency, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday urged voters to settle in for a nomination fight that could roll on for months to come.
“You know this is a long process,” Mrs. Clinton told reporters Tuesday morning outside a polling place in Houston.
It was an entirely different message from the one delivered by former President Bill Clinton just a few weeks ago, when he told Ohio and Texas voters that... (more)
The St. Petersburg Times has an interesting Op-Ed about how President Putin has built up Russia’s security apparatus to the point that it now it exceeds the power the feared KGB once held in the Soviet Union.
As a former KGB man himself, Putin has spent his Presidency rebuilding the secret police and intelligence services that former President Yeltsin dismantled. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the KGB was reborn as the FSB as it is called today.
Yeltsin felt that under Soviet rule the KGB had too much power and influence. He liked the U.S. system of spreading... (more)
John Kerry, the Democratic Party's 2004 nominee for president, took aim at Bill Clinton Friday, telling the National Journal the former president does "not have a license to abuse the truth."
The Massachusetts senator, who endorsed Barack Obama's White House bid earlier this month, said Clinton's criticisms of the Illinois senator have been "over the top," and suggested the former president is getting "frantic."
Targeting Clinton's recent spate of attacks on Obama, Kerry said, "I think you had an abuse of the truth, is what happened. …I mean, being an ex-president... (more)
Randy Gray, the Midland County, Michigan coordinator for the Ron Paul campaign is also a longstanding active and vocal organizer for the Knight's Party faction of the Ku Klux Klan.
A number of people have brought this to the attention of the Paul campaign, to which they have had no response. However, quite mysteriously the list of Michigan county contacts on the official site of the Ron Paul campaign has vanished.
It's just too bad the Ron Paul can't make Google's cached pages disappear, because phenry over at Daily Kos has located the missing pages.
Here is what the list... (more)
Time Warner will possibly be the first high-speed Internet provider to switch to a totally new pricing structure.
The company is set to begin a trial run in Beaumont, TX in which it will sell high-speed Internet access in a tiered structure based on how much data is download per month.
I have a bad feeling about this. Internet access has become so cheap that companies like Time Warner are looking for new ways to increase profits.
This tiered pricing structure sounds disturbingly similar to the way cell phone minutes are priced. I don’t even use Time... (more)
A revolution is afoot at the deli counters, grills and salad bars of the U.S. House of Representatives.
According to Politico, the cafeteria in The U.S. House of Representatives is now a very different place.
The processed cheese has been replaced with brie. The Jell-O has made way for raspberry kiwi tarts and mini-lemon blueberry trifles. Meatloaf has moved over for mahi mahi and buns have been shunted aside in favor of baguettes.
The menu transformation is part of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s “Greening the Capitol” plan to make the House campus more environmentally friendly... (more)
Attorney General Michael Mukasey appointed an outside prosecutor Wednesday to lead a criminal investigation into the destruction of CIA interrogation videotapes."The Department's National Security Division has recommended, and I have concluded, that there is a basis for initiating a criminal investigation of this matter, and I have taken steps to begin that investigation," Mukasey said in a statement released Wednesday.
Mukasey named John Durham, a federal prosecutor in Connecticut, to oversee the case. Durham has a reputation as one of the nation's most relentless prosecutors. He served... (more)
Larry Kudlow wrote a good piece in today's Washington Times in which he rightly points out that 2007 has been a pretty good year for President Bush, and a pretty good year for America. This has been the year of the much maligned "Troop Surge" in Iraq, which thanks to General David Petraeus is succeeding despite the best efforts of Congressional Democrats. America has yet to be attacked again since 9/11, and that much to the chagrin of many is mainly due to the President's aggressive War on Terror. Regardless of what professional haters like Paul Krugman continue to say, the Goldilocks economy... (more)
A Houston, Texas woman says she was gang-raped by Halliburton/KBR coworkers in Baghdad, and the company and the U.S. government are covering up the incident. Jamie Leigh Jones, now 22, says that after she was raped by multiple men at a KBR camp in the Green Zone, the company put her under guard in a shipping container with a bed and warned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, she'd be out of a job. In a lawsuit filed in federal court against Halliburton and its then-subsidiary KBR, Jones says she was held in the shipping container for at least 24 hours without food or water by... (more)
Larry Flynt will host a fundraising event benefiting the presidential campaign of Dennis Kucinich, tonight at Hustler-LFP headquarters in Los Angeles. The party is the first time Flynt has hosted a political fundraiser, though he is politically active and has attended many similar events in the past. Flynt, Hustler-LFP founder and longtime Kucinich supporter, said, “I support Dennis Kucinich because not only have I been a friend of his for 40 years, but I believe he offers an essential, viable and exciting option to the candidates that are more popular at the moment. Flynt with his wife... (more)
