There is no special reason why you should heed my plea, but I am an American citizen, a veteran, a Democrat and a supporter. The essence of my appeal is much broader than you or I. This concerns our country, our children, and everyone or everything we hold dear. The debacle of the debt ceiling debate and deal call into question the effectiveness of governance in the United States. As was demonstrated then, you face implacable foes that place nothing higher than your defeat. They have shown the citizenry and the world that their two-track strategy is divide and rule and rule or ruin.
In what was once the Promised Land,
Hallowed verities no longer stand.
The values of the days of yore
Raise curiosity and little more.
We find it oh so easy to lay blame,
We persist in playing this foolish game.
Each of us does our own part
To wound the nation’s pulsing heart
With anger, hate, fear or fatigue
We find ourselves in twisted league
Old friends have stumbled and gone astray
New foes arise to block our way.
The country reels; the children cry.
Have we ever paused and wondered why?
"The long, tortured debate exposed toxic partisanship and legislative dysfunction in Washington just when judicious efforts at reform were most needed," the contrived and completely unnecessary debt-ceiling crisis also exposed that America's real problem is not financial but political.[http://news.yahoo.com/debt-deal-set-pass-were-costs-045917154.htm] The debacle over the debt ceiling was not completely resolved when Senator Tom Coburn [R Oklahoma] said he would use parlimentary maneuvers to block Senate action to restore full operating authority to the FAA. This will cost the federal government... (more)
The phony crisis foisted upon the Republic and the citizenry of America by a fanatic faction of the Republican party will have direct and detrimental effects upon all but the corporate and financial elite. There are five ways in which the Republic and all but the favored few will be worse off if responsible and rational legislators do not prevail over those with a noxious agenda aimed at repealing the advances made in the middle fifty years of the twentith century.
First, the brinksmanship in Washington has dragged on long enough, that more and more international investors question the... (more)
The Republic is moving ever closer to a calamity. The impetus behind for slide is not primarily economic; the driving force behind the rush to disaster is political. Because the United States wages politics through a two party system, both major political are at fault. Despite the recent habit of asserting equivalency on many broadcasts and in some articles, while both parties share the blame for the dysfunction of American politics and governance, their culpabilities are different in kind and degree. “Think about what’s happening right now. We have a crisis in which the right is making insane... (more)
We have sung of grapes of wrath and a terrible swift sword
Of trampling the vineyards where greed grew and hate was stored
We did this while a terrible conflict raged and scourged the land
And millions fought and many fell so the Republic would still stand
In the midst of a Great Depression some believed could never happen here
A President stood on withered legs and declared the sole enemy was fear.
The country pulled together and waged a two front war with ferocious tyranny
There is not time for tricks and bickering when its win or not be free.... (more)
Because it has become so fashionable to sign pledges, compacts, and avow other forms of binding commitment, it might benefit us to consider making some promises based on patriotism rather than partisanship and opportunism. Please consider the following for what it is worth. These are promises one makes to oneself. They are promises we keep to each other, for our children, our parents, and any American we have ever loved, and for the Republic ordained and established more than 220 years ago.
The Patriot’s Promises
“As a patriotic American, I promise to uphold and advance governance... (more)
We cannot force the sun to rise before it is time. We cannot expect pearls from those wallowing in slime. Life has a pattern and ebb and a flow. The bad days come upon us and just as soon go. To those who speak ill and snarl in your face Turn a deaf ear. Put them in their place.
If you try to find comfort from people who can’t or won’t give, You’ll be at their mercy as long as you live.
They care not for your sorrow; they feast on your pain. The sooner you dismiss them, the sooner you gain.
Make the best that you can of this time and know it will pass. They cannot... (more)
Based on the sacred text of a contemporary Rasputin, a fanatic faction of the Republican Party has taken the Republic hostage and threatened it with grievous harm if not immediate death. The name of this American mad monk is Grover Norquist. As he says in the New York Times 22 July 2011 edition,
"Americans for Tax Reform created the pledge in 1986 as a simple, written commitment by a candidate or elected official that he or she will oppose, and vote against, tax increases." As of today, 236 current members of the House of Representatives and 41 current senators are signatories. According... (more)
“The rancorous debate over the debt belies a fundamental truth of our economy - it is run for the few at the expense of the many, that our entire government has been turned into a machine which takes the wealth of a mass of Americans and accelerates it into the hands of the few.” [http://www.truth-out.org/debt-political-theater-diverts-attention-while-americans-wealth-stolen/1310741026]
War takes the money from the American people and puts it into the hands of arms manufacturers, war profiteers, and firms staffing mercenary armies. $3 trillion will ultimately be expended on the attack... (more)
